A Wooden Church of 1903 in Tsuruoka
The Tsuruoka Catholic Church (鶴岡カトリック教会天主堂, Tsuruoka Katorikku Kyōkai Tenshudō) is a timber church built in 1903 in Babacho, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, and was designated an Important Cultural Property on May 21, 1979 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a timber building with a building area of 216.3 square metres, single-storey with a partial mezzanine, with a tower and a shoe room at the front; designation number 02084, owned by the Catholic Diocese of Niigata.
A Church on a Samurai Estate
According to the Tsuruoka Tourism Bureau, the church was paid for with the entire fortune of the French priest Father Dalibert and with donations, and was built on the site of a residence of a senior retainer of the Shonai domain. The Shonai Tourism and Convention Association identifies it as the estate of the Suematsu family and notes that the entrance gate still recalls a samurai residence.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs states that the church was designed by a French priest and built by Japanese carpenters. The Tsuruoka Tourism Bureau names the designer as Father Papinot, who designed many churches in Japan, including the Ryotsu Church on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture.

The red tower rising above white walls stands 23.7 metres high (Tsuruoka Tourism Bureau). Inside, the three-aisled nave is covered by a high rib-vaulted ceiling (Shonai Tourism and Convention Association).
A side altar on the left holds the Black Madonna. According to the Shonai Tourism and Convention Association, it was given by the convent of La Delivrande in France to mark the completion of the church and is the only one of its kind in Japan. The painted windows, made with a technique different from stained glass, are another highlight (Tsuruoka Tourism Bureau).
Visiting
According to the Tsuruoka Tourism Bureau, the church is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from April to September and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from October to March, with free admission. On Sundays, Mass means some morning hours are closed to visitors. It is a place of worship, so visit quietly.
Take a bus toward Yunohama Onsen from JR Tsuruoka Station, about 10 minutes, to Shiyakusho-mae, then walk 5 minutes (Tsuruoka Tourism Bureau). By car it is about 10 minutes from the Tsuruoka interchange of the Yamagata Expressway; the Shonai Tourism and Convention Association suggests the second car park of Tsuruoka City Hall.
