A Merchant House That Turned to Sake

Naganuma General Partnership Company (長沼合名会社, Naganuma Gōmei-gaisha) is a working sake brewery in Tokamachi, Nagai City, Yamagata Prefecture, whose six historic buildings, the oldest a shop and main house of 1838, were each registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 18 April 2008.

The compound fronts Tokamachi Street from the north. The Naganuma family has lived here since the Edo period. According to the brewery, the first nine heads of the house sold kimono fabrics and raised silkworms; the tenth began making sake in 1916 because there was no brewery nearby. Every head of the family inherits the name Naganuma Sōemon.

The present couple took over the brewing in 2007 and launched the Soumura (惣邑) label in 2010. They still steam rice in a wooden koshiki and press the mash in a traditional fune rather than an automatic press. The registered buildings are part of that work, not relics kept for show: storage tanks stand inside the middle storehouse.

Six Buildings and Two Criteria

The six registered buildings are the store and main house, the front storehouse, the inner storehouse, the new storehouse, the middle storehouse and the brewing storehouse. The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates the store and main house to 1838 (Tenpō 9), with a remodelling in 1958; the inner storehouse to the late Edo period (1830 to 1867); the new storehouse to 1886; and the front, middle and brewing storehouses to the Taishō era (1912 to 1925).

Two registration criteria apply. The store and main house was registered as a model of architectural form. The five storehouses were registered for their contribution to the historic landscape.

Line the dates up with the family story and the compound makes sense. The house and its household storehouses went up while the Naganumas were cloth merchants; three large storehouses arrived in the Taishō years, when they took up brewing. The front storehouse shows the change most directly. The agency describes it as three older earthen storehouses, built between the end of Edo and the Meiji era, joined into one building for sake production.

On 13 February 2018 the historic townscapes of Miya and Koide in Nagai were selected as an Important Cultural Landscape, the Townscape of Nagai in the Upper Reaches of the Mogami River. Nagai City lists Naganuma General Partnership Company among the key buildings of that landscape.

How the Compound Is Laid Out

Two buildings face the street. The front storehouse is a long earthen storehouse that turns its gable end to Tokamachi Street. The store and main house stands behind it, near the entrance to the lot, facing east.

The storehouses continue behind the house. The inner storehouse joins the north side of the house's earth-floored work area, and the new storehouse stands north of that. The middle storehouse lies northwest of the house, and the brewing storehouse occupies the northwest corner of the lot, just north of the middle storehouse. Walk it in that order and the buildings move from family storage beside the living rooms to the sheds where sake was made.

Names and Spellings

The Agency for Cultural Affairs reads the name as Naganuma gōmei-gaisha; the Yamagata tourism site spells it gōmei-kaisha and also calls the business Naganuma Shuzō, or Naganuma Sake Brewery. Gōmei-gaisha is the Japanese term for a general partnership company.

Besides Soumura, the brewery makes a local label called Kozakura. The Nagai tourism bureau says the name comes from medieval Kozakura Castle, whose site covered this area.

Two addresses are in use. The agency lists the buildings at 1-652-1 Tokamachi and other lots, a cadastral lot number, while the brewery's postal address is 1-1-39 Tokamachi.

Visiting and Getting There

Naganuma General Partnership Company is a working brewery, and no regular public opening of its buildings is announced. No visiting hours or admission fee are published. Nagai City asks visitors not to enter the grounds of the landscape's key buildings without the owner's permission, so view the compound from Tokamachi Street, where the gable of the front storehouse and the store and main house are both in sight. There is no published photography policy. Pictures of the exterior from the public street should be fine; inside the grounds or the buildings, ask the brewery first.

By rail, change at Akayu Station on the Yamagata Shinkansen to the Yamagata Railway Flower Nagai Line. The nearest station is Ayame Kōen, and Yamagata Prefecture gives about 7 minutes on foot from there to the Former Marudai Ōgiya merchant house on the same Tokamachi Street.
