A Shop and Home from 1838
Naganuma General Partnership Company Store and Main House (長沼合名会社店舗兼主屋) is a merchant house built in 1838 (Tenpō 9) in Tokamachi, Nagai City, Yamagata Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 18 April 2008. It is a single-storey timber building with a footprint of 149 square metres, remodelled in 1958.
It is the oldest and the largest of the six registered Naganuma buildings: 20 metres by 10 metres, holding both the shop and the family's living quarters under one roof. From the years when the Naganumas sold kimono fabrics to the start of brewing in 1916, this is where the business was run and the household lived.
The Only Building Registered for Its Form
The Naganuma General Partnership Company Store and Main House is the one building on the site registered as a model of architectural form. The five storehouses were all registered for their contribution to the historic landscape.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out the floor plan. The north side is an earth-floored Doma, a work and entrance space at ground level. The south side holds six rooms, among them a Zashiki reception room with a Tokonoma alcove and a household Shinto altar, a Buddhist altar room, a Nando storeroom and a family sitting room. The agency reads this arrangement as a plan with distinct regional character.
The Nagai tourism bureau describes the sequence in the Edo merchant manner: from the doma into the sitting room, then a second room, then the raised formal room at the back. Trade near the entrance, family life in the middle, guests at the far end.
A Thatched Roof in Metal
The roof is a gable that was originally thatched and is now clad in metal sheet. Along the ridge runs a koshi-yane, a small raised roof that lets smoke and heat escape from a house where fires burned in the doma and admits daylight.
The house stands near the entrance to the lot, which opens south onto the street, with its front facing east. On the north side of the doma a covered passage links it to the inner storehouse, so living space and household storage form one continuous building. When you look at the Naganuma General Partnership Company Store and Main House, use the long roof and the raised vent to picture where the doma lies inside.
Seeing the Store and Main House
The house sits near the entrance and can be seen from Tokamachi Street. Look past the gable end of the front storehouse for the broad roof facing east.
No public access to the interior is announced. It is also the home of a working brewery, so contact the brewery in advance if you hope to go further. There is no published photography policy.
