A Farmhouse With an Office in Front
Taruhei Sake Brewery Main House (樽平酒造主屋, Taruhei Shuzō Shuoku) is the combined office and family residence of a sake brewery in Nakakomatsu, Kawanishi Town, Yamagata Prefecture, dated to around 1695 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 5 November 1997 under registration number 06-0010.
It is really two buildings joined into one. At the back is a thatched farmhouse laid out on a rural plan; at the front, right on the street, is a rectangular two-storey office block. The whole is timber-built, 2 storeys, with a building area of 430 square metres. The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates the house to around 1695 and records a remodelling in 1932.
A brewer's main house has always done two jobs, sheltering the family and running the trade. At the Taruhei Sake Brewery Main House you can see the two jobs from the pavement.
Why It Was Registered
The building was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. What the Agency singles out is contrast: a street-facing office against a farmhouse with a deep kayabuki roof of thatched grass, the kind of house once common across the Okitama countryside.
Placing a hard-edged office in front of a farmhouse gives the street two faces at once. One is the company, the other the family that has run it for twelve generations. The office remodelling of 1932 fell in the same year the Inoue family opened the Kikusui Kōgeikan ceramics museum across the road.
The Agency also calls the Main House a landmark at the approach to Kawanishi, one of the first buildings seen by anyone arriving along the highway. Together with the East Storehouse, it is the image locals use for the town.
What to Look For
Stand on the highway and the office wall fills the view. Above and behind it the thatch rises in a thick, soft ridge. The office is all straight lines; the thatched roof swells from eave to ridge. That front-to-back difference is the whole point of the registration.
Move off to one side. From an angle you can see where the office meets the farmhouse and the roof changes shape and material.
Thatch changes colour with age. Fresh patches are pale and bright, older ones a dull brown, so the roof surface keeps a rough record of where it has been repaired.
Next to the Main House the gable end of the East Storehouse touches the street. Find the spot where thatch, office wall and storehouse gable line up, and it becomes clear why this building was registered as the start of a streetscape rather than as a lone object.
Seeing the Main House
The Taruhei Sake Brewery Main House is still a working office and a private home. The exterior can be viewed and photographed from the highway side; there is no announced public opening of the thatched living quarters.
