The Long Room at the Centre
Taruhei Sake Brewery Middle Storehouse (樽平酒造中蔵, Nakagura) is a mid-18th-century brewing storehouse in Nakakomatsu, Kawanishi Town, Yamagata Prefecture, built in the Edo period and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 5 November 1997 under registration number 06-0011.
It is a single-storey Dozo-zukuri building, earthen walls under white plaster, now roofed in sheet metal, with a building area of 428 square metres. That makes it the largest of the seven registered buildings, covering on one floor almost exactly the area the two-storey Main House (430 square metres) covers on two.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the Middle Storehouse as standing close to the Main House, at the centre of the storehouse group, and forming the core of the brewery. The East Storehouse joins its north end at a right angle, with the West Storehouse facing it. The plan reads like a spine with branches.
A Model Brewery Storehouse
Of the seven buildings, only the Middle Storehouse and the West Storehouse were registered as buildings that set a standard of design. The other five were recognised for the streetscape they create. These two were recognised for what they are.
The Agency calls the Taruhei Sake Brewery Middle Storehouse a good example of earthen-walled brewery architecture and points to its unusual length along the ridge, the Ketayuki dimension. Brewing is a sequence. Tubs and equipment line up in the order the work moves, and that asks for length more than depth. Here the requirement became the plan.
Only the Main House is older. A storehouse raised in the mid-18th century that is still the working heart of the brewery is the reason this building matters.
Seeing Its Length
The Agency notes that the long facade is best seen from the west. From the highway the Middle Storehouse sits behind other buildings and is hard to take in; the western side is where its length becomes obvious.
Follow the wall from one end to the other. Single storey or not, the building has real mass, with a run of white wall under one unbroken roofline.
At the north end, look for the junction where the East and West Storehouses meet the Middle Storehouse. It is the easiest place to see how the brewery grew outward from this building.
Visiting the Middle Storehouse
The Taruhei Sake Brewery Middle Storehouse is a working brewhouse and cannot be entered freely. The interior can only be seen as part of the brewery tour, held on weekday afternoons by reservation; ask when booking which storehouses the tour includes.
