What Is Uzen Kenren Co., Ltd.?

Uzen Kenren Co., Ltd. (羽前絹練株式会社, Uzen Kenren Kabushiki-gaisha) is a silk scouring works in Shinkaicho, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, that has been processing silk fabric since 1906; seven of its factory buildings, dating from the late Taisho period to about 1943, became Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on 3 December 2024. The site lies west of the ruins of Tsurugaoka Castle, and all seven buildings are still working shop floors.

The company was founded in June 1906. According to Tsuruoka City, it was set up to handle scouring for Uzen Orimono, a weaving company established the following year to make silk cloth for export. In March 1924 Uzen Kenren absorbed a scouring firm affiliated with Tsuruoka Orimono and became, in the city's words, the region's near-monopoly scourer.

After the Second World War, scourers across Japan moved into synthetic-fibre processing as the silk market shrank. Uzen Kenren stayed with silk, taking orders from weaving districts around the country, and later added dyeing and specialist finishing, including scarves made for overseas markets.

What Silk Scouring Is, and Which Building Does What

Freshly woven silk still carries sericin, the gummy protein that binds the cocoon filaments, along with other residues. Scouring (seiren) removes them by boiling the cloth in hot water with soap and alkali. Only after this step does silk take on its familiar softness and sheen; it sits between weaving and dyeing in the chain that begins with silkworm rearing.

At Uzen Kenren Co., Ltd. each registered building handles one stage of that sequence:

• Office and Preparation Building: bolts of cloth are wound onto wooden frames ready for scouring
• Scouring Building: the cloth is boiled in vats to strip out impurities
• Dyeing Building: scoured cloth is dyed
• First Finishing Building: rinsing, spin-drying and drying
• Second Finishing Building: cloth that has shrunk in drying is brought back into shape
• Inspection Building: cloth is checked by eye and divided for shipping
• Storehouse: finished goods are kept here

The buildings that work with hot water and drying all carry a raised ridge vent, or Koshi-yane, to let out steam and let in daylight. The row of these small secondary roofs is what gives the Uzen Kenren works its profile.

Registration and Site Layout

Following a recommendation by the Council for Cultural Affairs on 19 July 2024, the seven Uzen Kenren buildings were registered together on 3 December 2024 under Ministry of Education notice No. 162, as Registered Tangible Cultural Property numbers 06-0222 to 06-0228. The additions brought the number of nationally registered buildings in Tsuruoka to 26.

The storehouse was registered as a model of form; the other six were registered for their contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives these dates and sizes:

• Office and Preparation Building: 1940, extended in the mid-Showa period; single storey with a two-storey section, 705 square meters
• Scouring Building: late Taisho period; single storey, 368 square meters
• Dyeing Building (Former Dyeing Room and Former Boiler Room): 1929, extended about 1933 and in the mid-Showa period; single storey, 238 square meters
• First Finishing Building: late Taisho period, extended in the early Showa period; single storey, 391 square meters
• Second Finishing Building: late Taisho period, extended in the mid-Showa period; single storey, 368 square meters
• Inspection Building: about 1943; single storey, 357 square meters
• Storehouse: late Taisho period, moved to the site in 1940; two storeys, 75 square meters

The database uses 1919 to 1926 for the late Taisho period. Yamagata Prefecture describes the layout as follows: the office sits in the northeast corner with the preparation building running south from it; the scouring, dyeing and two finishing buildings line up to the west; the inspection building and storehouse stand to the southeast. The inspection building alone has a separate lot number, 21-3.

Part of the Samurai Silk Japan Heritage Story

Uzen Kenren Co., Ltd. is one of the components of the Japan Heritage story recognised in 2017 under the title "Samurai Silk" (サムライゆかりのシルク). After the Meiji Restoration, former retainers of the Shonai domain cleared the Matsugaoka plateau and built silkworm-rearing halls there, which set Tsuruoka on its path as a silk district. The Japan Heritage narrative presents the area as a place where every stage from sericulture through reeling, weaving, scouring and printing still survives, and it counts the scouring done at this Meiji-era works among those stages.

The Japan Heritage listing also notes that some of the vats in use today date from the company's founding.

Visiting Uzen Kenren

Uzen Kenren Co., Ltd. is a working factory, and all seven buildings are in daily use. As of 28 September 2026 we could find no public factory tours listed by the company, Tsuruoka City or the Japan Heritage council. Please stay on the public road and view the buildings from outside.

The part most visible from the street is the office in the northeast corner. The Japan Heritage listing singles out its black board fence and the pine by the gate, a pairing it compares to the fences around samurai houses and modern Japanese-style buildings.

According to the company, the works is about 3 km, roughly 10 minutes by car, from JR Tsuruoka Station on the Uetsu Line, about 3 km from the Tsuruoka interchange on the Yamagata Expressway, and about 16 km, around 25 minutes by car, from Shonai Airport.
