Intangible Folk Cultural Properties Requiring Documentation of Yamaguchi

The Akasaki Shrine Dedicatory Performing Arts are a suite of folk performing arts — Gaku Odori drum dances, Nanjo Odori warrior dance, and Shiki Sanbaso ceremonial dance — presented annually on September 10th at Akasaki Shrine in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Originating from prayers to end a livestock plague in 1596, these arts are performed in a nationally designated horseshoe-shaped open-air amphitheater, preserving over 400 years of unbroken tradition.

Iwakuni Nanjō Odori is a samurai-derived folk dance preserved in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, selected as a nationally significant intangible folk cultural property in 1974. Said to have been learned by Kikkawa retainers from the Nanjō clan during the late-16th-century Chūgoku Campaign, it is dedicated each October at Kikkō Shrine during the Iwakuni Festival.
