A Spanish-Style Church above the Kanmon Strait

The United Church of Christ in Japan Shimonoseki Maruyama Church Sanctuary (former Japan Methodist Shimonoseki Church) (日本基督教団下関丸山教会(旧日本メソヂスト下関教会)会堂) is a timber church built in 1938 in Maruyamacho, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, which in 2004 was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey timber building with a partial second floor and a tower, a tiled roof and a building area of 143 square metres. It belongs to the Shimonoseki Maruyama Church of the United Church of Christ in Japan and was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.

The church calls the sanctuary the Lambuth Memorial Hall.

The Church's History

The church's chronology records a Methodist Episcopal preaching place opened in Tanakacho, Shimonoseki, on 19 November 1904, which became the Japan Methodist Shimonoseki Church in Kannoncho in 1908. In 1926 a temporary church that also served as the manse was built in Maruyamacho, and the present sanctuary was completed in 1938.

When the United Church of Christ in Japan was formed in 1941, the Japan Methodist Church joined it and the congregation took its present name. The words former Japan Methodist Shimonoseki Church in the registered name record that history.

A pipe organ was installed in 1995, and restoration of the exterior walls was completed in 2021.

What to Look For

The Agency describes the church on a rise overlooking the Kanmon Strait. Its Spanish-style front shows a broad gable end with a tower to the right, and the white walls and red tiles make a striking contrast.

Inside, the worship hall is plainly composed, with an exposed roof frame in the manner of a king post truss. The beams and posts left open to view give the Shimonoseki Maruyama Church its interior structure.
