The Yamanouchi Family Residence Gate and Wall (山内家住宅門及び塀, Yamanouchi-ke Jūtaku Mon oyobi Hei) is the gate and boundary wall of a family estate in Sakaemachi, Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, built around 1931 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on April 25, 2014. The registration covers a timber gate near the west end of the north side and a brick wall 48 metres in total length that wraps the grounds.

The gate is a Munamon, 2.1 metres wide, braced by rear posts and flanked by short wing walls, with sliding plank doors instead of hinged leaves. For anyone walking past, the Yamanouchi Family Residence Gate and Wall is the Yamanouchi Family Residence: it is what the estate shows the street.

Why It Was Registered: Pink Brick

The Yamanouchi Family Residence Gate and Wall was registered as No. 35-0092 under the criterion for structures that contribute to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it with tidying the estate's frontage and with carrying a distinct regional character.

That character lies in the bricks. The wall is built of tanshi renga, cinder brick made with coal ash, known locally as momoiro renga, pink brick. The nickname alone tells you this is not the familiar red brick of Japan's Meiji-era factories and warehouses.

The wall is laid in stretcher bond, only half a brick thick, with every brick showing its long face. A wall that thin cannot stand on its own for long, so pilasters were built out along the inner side. From the street you see an even plane of brick; the engineering stays on the private side.

What to Look For

Only the north stretch of the Yamanouchi Family Residence Gate and Wall, the one facing the street, is finished with a sawtooth course along the top. The serrated edge breaks up what would otherwise be a long, flat run of brick, and the fact that it appears nowhere else shows the wall was dressed for passers-by.

The gate itself is a munamon, about the simplest roofed gate there is: two posts carrying a small gabled roof. Here it has been given extra presence with rear bracing posts and wing walls on either side, and its plank doors slide rather than swing.

Immediately west of the gate, the estate's two-storey storehouse fills the northwest corner. Farther east, the vertical-board backs of the maidservants' quarters and barn take over as the boundary and join the brick. Brick, white plaster and weathered timber make up one continuous street front.

Visiting

Of the six registered structures at the Yamanouchi Family Residence, the Yamanouchi Family Residence Gate and Wall is the easiest to see. The gate and north wall face the public road and can be viewed from outside. The estate is a private home, though, and you cannot go through the gate (checked September 26, 2026).
