About the Yamanouchi Family Residence Main House

The Yamanouchi Family Residence Main House (山内家住宅主屋, Yamanouchi-ke Jūtaku Shuoku) is a single-storey timber house built around 1931 in Sakaemachi, Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on April 25, 2014. It is the principal building of the Yamanouchi Family Residence, standing in the middle of the walled plot and facing north toward the street. Note the reading: Yamanouchi, not Yamauchi.

The house covers 279 square metres and is really two wings joined in a T. One holds the zashiki, the formal tatami rooms where guests were received; the other is the living wing where the household went about its day. Hospitality and daily life each got their own block, meeting at a single junction.

Why It Was Registered

The Yamanouchi Family Residence Main House was registered as No. 35-0087, the first of six numbers issued to the estate that day, under the criterion for structures that contribute to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a neatly composed residence of the early Showa period.

That neatness comes from restraint. Formality is reserved for two places. At the entrance hang a gable pendant and funa-hijiki, simple boat-shaped bearing blocks set on top of the posts. In the reception rooms, the ranma transoms above the sliding doors are cut through with openwork patterns that include hanamaru, stylised flower roundels. Both motifs come from temple and upper-class architecture, and here they appear only where a guest would see them.

The other telling detail is a Western-style room attached to the northwest corner of the reception wing, used as an office. A house otherwise built in the Japanese manner set aside one room for business, which suggests the family ran its affairs from home.

What to Look For

The roof of the Yamanouchi Family Residence Main House is hipped-and-gabled (Irimoya-zukuri), ringed by a lower pent roof and covered in interlocking pantiles. Put that roof on a T-shaped plan and the two ridges cross at right angles, so gable ends face more than one direction. It gives a one-storey house a layered roofscape.

The entrance faces north, toward the front of the estate. The gable pendant and the boat-shaped blocks are the most deliberately formal elements of the building; the blocks are a modest form, and on a house entrance they read as dignified rather than showy.

The openwork transoms and the Western-style office are interior features. Neither can be seen from outside.

Visiting

The Yamanouchi Family Residence Main House is a private home and is not open to the public. As of September 26, 2026, we found no announced opportunities to see the transoms or the office room.

Because the house stands in the middle of the plot behind the north gate and wall, the street offers limited views; expect glimpses of the roof rather than a full elevation. Please don't linger at the gate or point a camera through it.
