What Is the Hagiwara Family Residence (Former Oki Family Residence) Oshian?

The Hagiwara Family Residence (Former Oki Family Residence) Oshian is a late Edo-period (1830–1868) teahouse and its Meiji-period privy on a private residential lot in Yumura, Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, both registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on March 13, 2025.

The name is written 萩原家住宅(旧大木家住宅)翁姿庵 and read Hagiwara-ke jūtaku (kyū Ōki-ke jūtaku) Ōshi-an. Oshian is the name given to the tea room, and as the bracketed part of the name says, the buildings once belonged to the residence of the Oki family. This page covers the teahouse in Kofu; it is a separate property from the Hagihara Family Residence in Katsunuma or the Hagiwara Family Residence in Yao, Osaka.

A Teahouse and Privy Moved Twice

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records that both the teahouse and the privy were relocated in 1948 and again in 1991. The teahouse dates from the late Edo period and the privy from the late Meiji period (1898–1912), so two buildings of different ages have traveled together. The published sources do not say where they stood before each move.

Today the pair stands within a residential property in Yumura, in the northwest of Kofu. The privy, or setchin, sits north of the teahouse and faces south, serving as its companion building.

The Two Registered Buildings

Following a recommendation by the Council for Cultural Affairs on November 22, 2024, the two buildings of the Oshian became Registered Tangible Cultural Properties (Buildings) on March 13, 2025. Both were registered under the criterion of serving as a model of form and design.

  • Hagiwara Family Residence (Former Oki Family Residence) Oshian Teahouse: late Edo period, relocated in 1948 and 1991. Single-story timber building, thatched roof (temporarily sheathed in steel), 13 m² building area
  • Hagiwara Family Residence (Former Oki Family Residence) Oshian Setchin: late Meiji period, relocated in 1948 and 1991. Single-story timber building, thatched roof (temporarily sheathed in steel), 4.1 m² building area

The Council's recommendation praises the tea room, two and three-quarter mats in size, for its carefully selected materials such as a soot-darkened bamboo cornice and a paulownia-board ceiling. It describes the privy, with a urinal set on a marble-paved earthen floor, as small but finely made. A teahouse and its privy surviving and registered together is the point of this pair.

Visiting the Oshian

The Hagiwara Family Residence (Former Oki Family Residence) Oshian stands on private residential land and is not open to the public. There are no viewing days or fees, and no information suggests the buildings can be seen from the street (checked October 2026). Please do not enter the property or look into the house.

Photographs of the exterior and interior are available in the Agency for Cultural Affairs database and on Cultural Heritage Online. Yumura 3-chome is a residential district about 2 kilometers northwest of JR Kofu Station in a straight line.
