The tower over Nichiren's grave

The Minobusan Kuonji Sobyo Mausoleum Tower (身延山久遠寺祖廟塔, Sobyōtō) is a mausoleum tower of 1942 standing over the grave of Nichiren in the Nishidani valley at Minobusan Kuonji in Minobu, Minobu Town, Yamanashi Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2018/05/10.

The temple calls the grave the Sobyo, "the founder's tomb", or simply the Gobyo, and the structure raised over it the Sobyo tower. Inside stands the original gorinto, a five-part stone memorial, that holds Nichiren's relics; part of his remains rest in a vault below ground.

Tradition holds that the 5 characters of Myoho Renge Kyo, the title of the Lotus Sutra, cut into the gorinto were brushed by Nissho or by Niko, two of his senior disciples. The temple gives both names.

Marble, stone and a spire

According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Minobusan Kuonji Sobyo Mausoleum Tower is octagonal in plan and rises from a base of rough-laid stone ringed by a stone fence. Its body tapers as it climbs and is faced in marble; the capstone curves upward at the eaves and carries a sorin, the ringed spire that tops Buddhist pagodas. At 12 metres high, it is in the agency's words a grand mausoleum.

The record is not consistent about what lies under the marble. Its structure field lists a single-storey stone building with a footprint of 11 square metres and a stone fence, while the commentary in the same entry describes reinforced concrete. What you see from outside is marble and stone; the core is described 2 different ways.

What to look for, and visiting

Visitors pray to the Minobusan Kuonji Sobyo Mausoleum Tower from the worship hall directly in front of it, and from there the octagonal shaft and its spire rise straight ahead. The temple website does not mention any public access to the gorinto inside.

Kuonji asks visitors not to smoke or walk dogs in the sacred grave precinct. Photography inside halls is generally not allowed, but you may photograph freely outdoors. Hours and directions for the temple are on the Minobusan Kuonji page.
