The guardian gate on the summit

The Minobusan Kuonji Shishinkaku Niomon Gate (身延山久遠寺思親閣仁王門, Shishinkaku Niōmon) is a gate of 1935 guarding the Okunoin Shishinkaku, the inner sanctuary on the summit of Mount Minobu, 1,153 metres up, at Minobusan Kuonji in Minobu, Minobu Town, Yamanashi Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2018/05/10.

Shishinkaku means "pavilion for thinking of one's parents". During his 9 years on Minobu, Nichiren is said to have climbed here from his hermitage in the Nishidani valley to remember his parents and his teacher Dozenbo, far away in Kominato in Awa Province. The temple calls the summit a sacred place of filial devotion, and its guide to the grounds notes that the Niomon, home to statues of the Nio guardian kings, protects the precinct.

The Minobusan Ropeway climbs from behind the main hall to the summit in about 7 minutes; the hiking trail takes about 2 hours. The Okunoin bell house dates from the same year, 1935.

A 3-bay gate for the guardian kings

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey timber gate of 35 square metres with a copper roof. It is a hakkyakumon, an "eight-legged gate": 3 bays wide with a single passage through the centre bay, and auxiliary posts in front of and behind the main posts. The gabled roof is covered in copper sheet laid over battens.

In each end bay the front half is an earthen floor, while the back half has a boarded floor and a platform for the Nio statues, the muscular guardians who flank temple gates. Lintels and head beams lock the frame together. Under the eaves are single-stepped bracket sets with frog-leg struts and curved boards between them, and the gable ends are decorated with a double tier of rainbow beams.

The agency describes the Minobusan Kuonji Shishinkaku Niomon Gate as richly designed, giving the precinct a dignified front.

What to look for, and visiting

At the Minobusan Kuonji Shishinkaku Niomon Gate, look into the rear of each end bay for the guardian statues on their platforms, then up at the frog-leg struts between the brackets. From the side, the paired rainbow beams fill the gable.

The gate stands outdoors, and Kuonji allows photography outside its halls. For visits to the Okunoin and its events, the temple asks people to contact the Okunoin Shishinkaku directly. Hours and directions for the temple are on the Minobusan Kuonji page.
