Catholic Chikaramachi Church
The Catholic Chikaramachi Church in Chikaramachi, Higashi Ward, Nagoya, keeps a mid Meiji parish hall and brick wall and a presbytery of 1930, which were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on July 25, 2011 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency notes that all three contribute to the historic landscape.
The Three Structures
The parish hall faces north on a corner of Chikaramachi: a two-storey timber house with a hipped pantile roof, a gabled entrance at the centre and white-painted clapboard, a Meiji Western-style building basically in the colonial style (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The presbytery stands against the east side of the parish hall, two storeys of timber over a basement, enlivened by a two-storey bay window on the east (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The brick wall runs 29 metres along Chikaramachi street on the north of the site, 2.1 metres high, in English bond on two courses of cut stone (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each is now a Registered Tangible Cultural Property and is covered on its own page.
Getting There
The brick wall faces the street and can be seen from outside. No official information on access to the interiors of the church buildings was found.
