Why It Was Registered
The Kozenji Temple Kuri (Priests' Quarters) was registered as a model of design. According to the Agency, it is a gabled building with a tiled roof, running north to south east of the main hall.
It is divided into a reception wing on the west and living quarters on the east, each arranged from the front as earth floor, boarded room and tatami rooms; the earth floor and boarded room of the living quarters have been converted into Western-style rooms.
What to Look For
Look at the roof framing shown on the gable end. According to the Agency, rainbow beams, a large vase-shaped strut and curved tie beams appear there, and the raised smoke-vent roof catches the eye.
Dating from 1830, it is the oldest of Kozenji's three registered buildings and shows the late Edo face of a temple rebuilt after it burned down in 1680.
