Narumi Tegashi Shrine Office: The Largest and Plainest of the 6

Narumi Tegashi Shrine Office (鳴海杻神社社務所) is the administrative building of Narumi Tegashi Shrine in the Haguro district of Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture, built around 1917 (Taishō 6) and entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2024 (Reiwa 6). It stands in the southeast corner of the precinct, east of the entrance to the approach path, and covers 69 square metres.

That figure is worth holding onto. The main hall of the same shrine, registered on the same day and carrying all the carving, occupies 5.2 square metres. The shrine office is more than 13 times larger in floor area and has almost no ornament at all. The national database records its design as plain, and then adds that it tightens the appearance of the ground beside the precinct entrance.

Single-storeyed, it has an Irimoya-zukuri hipped-gable roof in Sangawara-buki pantiles, entered on the long eaves side in the Hirairi manner. At the centre of the west front, facing the approach, a porch with its own Kirizuma-zukuri gable projects forward.

Why a Plain Building Enters the Register

A group of 6 buildings at the shrine was registered together in 2024. Narumi Tegashi Shrine Office holds registration number 23-0596, and like 5 of the 6 it qualified under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country, rather than the design criterion applied to the main hall alone.

The distinction explains what the register is for. A shrine is not only its sanctuary. It is a place where a community keeps records, receives visitors, holds meetings and stores things, and the buildings that do that work shape how the precinct looks from the road as much as the ornamented ones do. Strip a shrine of its office and its outbuildings and what remains is a stage set.

Inuyama City has been unusually active in using the system. By the city's own count in 2025 the municipality contains 158 registered tangible cultural properties in the building category, about 27 percent of the 580 in Aichi Prefecture. A city reaching that proportion is not registering only its showpieces.

The Plan Is a House Plan

What makes Narumi Tegashi Shrine Office interesting is its layout, which is recorded in the national database in enough detail to reconstruct mentally as you stand outside.

A corridor runs along the front. North of it lie 2 rooms: a reception room of 8 Tatami mats fitted with a Tokonoma alcove, and a 6-mat anteroom beside it. South of the corridor, a 6-mat office and a kitchen sit side by side, running east to west.

This is domestic architecture. The pairing of a formal room with an alcove and a smaller room next to it, the corridor along the front, the kitchen at the back of the arrangement: any Japanese house of the period would recognise the sequence. A shrine office is where a family receives guests on behalf of a deity, and the plan says so plainly.

It also tells you how the building is used. The 8-mat room with its alcove is for visitors of consequence, the 6-mat anteroom for waiting, the 6-mat office for the paperwork of a parish, the kitchen for the tea and the food that accompany a festival. A building of 69 square metres holding 4 distinct functions is an efficient piece of planning, and none of it is visible from the front elevation.

From the outside, look at the porch. A gabled entrance projecting from the centre of an otherwise unbroken eaves-side facade is the one gesture of formality the building allows itself, and it is aimed squarely at the approach path.

Visiting

The shrine is at 109 Narumigō, Haguro, Inuyama City. Haguro Station on the Meitetsu Komaki Line is about 1.1 kilometres to the west, roughly 15 minutes on foot, and lies 1 stop south of Inuyama Station.

Narumi Tegashi Shrine Office is the first of the registered buildings a visitor passes, standing immediately east of the entrance to the approach. Across the same entrance to the west, the Benten hall sits beside its pond.

No admission fee or opening hours have been published for the precinct, and no notice restricting photography has been published. There is no published arrangement for entering the shrine office, and no announcement that it is regularly staffed, so a visitor should not assume the building will be open or that amulets and seals will be available. Anyone needing to be certain should contact the Historical Townscape Division of the Inuyama City Board of Education on 0568-44-0354 in advance, since the division handles registered buildings in the city.

The exterior repays a short walk around it. The relationship between the low eaves line and the projecting gabled porch is easiest to read from the approach path itself, looking east.
