Narumi Tegashi Shrine Benten Hall

The Narumi Tegashi Shrine Benten Hall (鳴海杻神社弁天堂) is a structure of 1865 at Narumi Tegashi Shrine in Haguro, Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 6, 2024, under registration number 23-0597. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 20 square metres. It is the oldest building in the grounds.

Why It Was Registered

The Narumi Tegashi Shrine Benten Hall was registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the country. According to the Agency, it stands on the east bank of a spring-fed pond west of the approach entrance: 3 ken across and 2.5 ken deep, with a pyramidal tiled roof, a 1 ken porch at the front and verandas on three sides.

Inside is a single 8-mat room with paintings on the panels of its coffered ceiling, and at the back, divided into three, a gold-leafed shrine stands at the centre. The Agency describes it as a Benten hall that forms a scenic focal point on the pond.

What to Look For

Look at the paintings on the ceiling panels and the gold-leafed shrine at the centre (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Standing on the pond's east bank, it seems to float on the water. Inuyama City also notes the Benten Hall as a late Edo building within the shrine grounds.
