Renkeiji Temple Great Gate

A Grand Four-Legged Gate of 1896

The Renkeiji Temple Great Gate (蓮慶寺大門) is a grand four-legged gate of 1896 in Uedai, Agui Town, Chita District, Aichi Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on June 21, 2013 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a timber gate 4.5 metres wide with a tiled roof; registration number 23-0379.

Double Tie Beams and a Decorated Strut

The great gate stands in the south-east corner of the precinct in front of the main hall, facing east; it is a four-legged gate with a gabled roof of full tiles and two tiers of closely set rafters (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Its main posts are round and its rear posts square with chamfered corners, set on stone bases.

It has a coffered ceiling and closely spaced three-block brackets with bracket arms and nosed ends, and in each gable a vase-shaped strut with scrolled wings stands on double tie beams (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is grand in scale and high in quality.
