Shrine Buildings of 1636 in Okazaki
The Rokusho Shrine (六所神社) is a group of shrine buildings of 1636 in Myodaijicho, Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, and was designated an Important Cultural Property on May 13, 1935 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records three buildings, all of 1636: the main hall with the offering and worship halls, the offering kitchen and the tower gate, with 6 shrine cabinets and 6 ridge tags designated alongside them; designation number 00946.
The Three Buildings
The main hall, offering hall and worship hall form one connected building: a three-bay nagare-style main hall, an offering hall with a simple gabled roof, and a hip-and-gable worship hall with a triangular gable on its front and a porch under a cusped gable (Agency for Cultural Affairs). All are roofed in cypress bark.
The offering kitchen, 5 bays by 2, has a hip-and-gable roof, and the tower gate is three bays wide with a single doorway, also under a hip-and-gable roof; both are roofed in thick wooden shingles (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Why It Is an Important Cultural Property
The Agency designated the three buildings of 1636, together with 6 shrine cabinets and 6 ridge tags, as Important Cultural Properties. According to the Aichi Prefecture tourism site, the shrine was long revered by the Matsudaira clan, and its rich carving and colouring all date from the Edo period.
What to Look For
Look for the brightly coloured tower gate and the carving and colouring of the buildings behind it (Aichi Prefecture). On the worship hall, note how the triangular gable sits above the cusped porch roof (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The prefecture says the buildings were restored in 1976 with the same methods used at Nikko Toshogu, and a major restoration was completed in 2017.
Visiting
According to the Aichi Prefecture tourism site, the shrine is about 2 minutes on foot from the south exit of Higashi-Okazaki Station on the Meitetsu Nagoya Line, with free parking for 70 cars. The site also relates that the Matsudaira clan worshipped here as their guardian shrine when Tokugawa Ieyasu was born.
