What the Takigawa Family Residence Nagayamon Gate Is
The Takigawa Family Residence Nagayamon Gate (瀧川家住宅長屋門, Takigawake Jūtaku Nagayamon) is a single-storey timber gatehouse of 1763 in the hamlet of Suzawa, Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 9 February 2005. It stands south of the main house, at the point where the approach reaches the terrace on which the residence sits.
A Nagayamon is a gate with living quarters built into its flanks. In samurai households the side rooms housed gatekeepers and attendants, and the form was restricted by custom to families of sufficient standing. The Takigawa were entrusted in 1698 with the post of Daikan, intendant for the Mikawa holdings of the Hatamoto Shitara family, and held it by inheritance until the Meiji Restoration. The Takigawa Family Residence Nagayamon Gate was the outward statement of that rank.
The dates repay attention. The gate was built in 1763, roughly half a century before the main house, which went up in 1814 at Takehiro as the Shitara family's administrative headquarters and was moved here only in 1869. The gate was standing first. The house arrived later and passed through it.
Why It Was Registered
The Takigawa Family Residence Nagayamon Gate was registered under the criterion "contributing to the historical landscape of the nation," with registration number 23-0184. That is a different criterion from the one applied to the main house (23-0183), which was listed as a model of design. The stone hokora on the same grounds (23-0185) completed the group in the 45th round of registrations.
The landscape criterion judges a building by the scene it holds together rather than by its merits as an isolated object. Climbing toward the terrace, a visitor sees the gate first; the house sits behind it and out of view. The silhouette that the settlement below reads as "the Takigawa place" is essentially this gate.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that although the interior rooms have been remodelled, the entrance surround and the barred window on the front elevation survive well, and together they convey the standing of an intendant's residence. The assessment rests on the exterior composition, not on completeness of fabric.
A note on terminology. Registered Tangible Cultural Property status, introduced in 1996, works by notification: owners inform the authorities of changes rather than applying for permission. It is distinct from the older system, which works by designation. The Takigawa Family Residence Nagayamon Gate is registered, not designated.
Looking at the Gate
Timber frame, one storey, tiled roof, 46 square metres of floor area. The recorded dimensions are six and a half ken along the front and two ken in depth. Taking one ken as roughly 1.8 metres, that gives a frontage of about 11.8 metres and a depth of about 3.6 metres. The roof is a Kirizuma-zukuri gable clad in Sangawara-buki pantile. Long and low, the building reads horizontally.
The doorway is not centred. It sits toward the western end, framed by heavy jamb posts with a smaller pedestrian door beside it, and rooms of unequal size occupy the bays to either side. A lean-to extends from the west face. The asymmetry is the mark of a working building rather than a ceremonial one.
The feature to stop for is the barred window on the front, a Musha-mado. Thick vertical bars let a gatekeeper watch the approach while remaining difficult to see from outside. Shinshiro City also records a surviving wicket door and camphor-wood door leaves studded with nipple-shaped metal bosses. The bosses are laid out in a regular grid across the leaves, and they are worth looking at closely.
Later hands have reworked the interior rooms. When you look at the Takigawa Family Residence Nagayamon Gate, the reward is in the entrance composition and the front elevation, not the plan.
Visiting
The Takigawa Family Residence Nagayamon Gate belongs to a private home. Neither the Agency for Cultural Affairs database nor Shinshiro City's cultural property pages record any public opening, and the ground beyond the gate is somebody's daily life. Assume that passing through is not possible. To ask about viewing, contact the Shinshiro City Board of Education, History and Culture Division, on 0536-23-7610 (weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.).
Photograph the exterior from the public road. The door leaves and the barred window are perfectly legible from outside, so there is no reason to step onto the property.
The nearest station is Ōmi on the JR Iida Line, about 1.5 kilometres away in a straight line, with an uphill walk of roughly 30 minutes. Shinshiro Station on the same line lies about 6 kilometres off.
Shinshiro City's community bus, the S-Bus, covers the Tōgō district that includes Suzawa on its Tōgō line. Service runs on weekdays only, with nothing on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, or over the New Year. From 6 April 2026 several zones changed to on-demand operation requiring a booking by 4 p.m. the day before. Check the city timetable and reservation zones before travelling. No visitor parking appears in any published source.
