What a hatamoto was

A hatamoto was a direct retainer of the Tokugawa shogunate whose rank entitled him to an audience with the shogun. Below the daimyo in income, he kept a residence in Edo while holding a fief elsewhere.

The term enters cultural property records to explain where a building came from. The Takigawa Residence in Aichi Prefecture, built in 1814 and moved in 1869, is described as the relocated Jinya of the hatamoto Shitara family: a single-storey house, pantiled where it was once Kayabuki, centred on two adjoining Zashiki with a Nando behind and a kitchen and Doma with a large hearth to the east. The entry calls it a rare survival of such a house.

The gatehouse on the same property, built in 1763, is described as retaining its doorway and its Musha-mado, which convey its standing as the estate of a Daikan serving a hatamoto. The gate's frontage is cited as evidence of rank.

Because a hatamoto lived in Edo as a rule, he governed his fief through an administrative house staffed by a deputy. Buildings connected with the class that survive in the provinces are mostly the houses of those deputies or the administrative houses themselves.

Reading the record

When a building record names a hatamoto, the building is usually an instrument of government in the fief rather than the retainer's own home. The Takigawa house was his administrative house, not his Edo residence.

Such houses are few, and records say so. Smaller than the castles and administrative houses of daimyo, they often survived only by becoming farmhouses.

Three terms need holding together when writing: the hatamoto as lord, the daikan as the official who governed on the ground, and the jinya as the office and residence he governed from.
