Brick Dentils on a Clay Store

The Akagawa Family Residence Storehouse is a two-storey earthen-walled store, six bays by three under a gabled sheet-iron roof, whose outer walls were later faced in brick (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Agency records the name of the master carpenter who built it.

It stands on a dressed-stone base; the band below the eaves is plastered, and rows of brick dentils run along the lower edge of that band and along the belt course (Agency for Cultural Affairs). A doorway finished in black plaster opens on the north, and another on the south is framed in brick.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency values the combination of a clay storehouse with brick ornament, and registered it as a building that would not be easy to reproduce.

What to Look For

Look for the brick dentils along the eaves band and belt course, the black-plastered doorway and the brick-framed doorway (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
