What Is the Yamakichi Miso and Soy Sauce Brewery Main House?

The Yamakichi Miso and Soy Sauce Brewery Main House (ヤマキチ味噌醤油醸造元主屋, Yamakichi Miso Shōyu Jōzōmoto Omoya) is a single-story timber merchant house in Ishiwaki, Yurihonjo City, Akita Prefecture, built around 1916 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on February 27, 2023. It is the family residence of a miso and soy sauce brewer and faces south onto Ishiwaki Street. The building covers 123 square meters and was renovated in 1981.

The roof is a simple Kirizuma-zukuri gable, and the house is entered from the gable end, an arrangement called Tsumairi. That puts the triangular end wall, rather than the long side, toward the street. The roof is sheet metal. The house stands back from the road behind a south-facing garden, joins the shop at the middle of its west wall, and connects to the storehouse at its northeast corner.

When the Yamakichi Main House went up, the family was still running a koji shop. Miso brewing, the start of the business as it is known today, came a year later, in 1917. The house is older than the brewery it now belongs to.

Why It Was Registered

The Yamakichi Miso and Soy Sauce Brewery Main House was listed under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country, with registration number 05-0235, the first of the brewery's five. The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out its gable end, where beams and short posts are stacked in tiers and shown openly to the street, as the feature that helps shape the townscape of a district that prospered through brewing.

Behind that narrow front, the house runs deep. Its plan is a Rokumadori, six rooms set in two rows of three, with a veranda along the east side. A gable-entry house like this presents a modest width to the street while its rooms line up one behind another toward the back. The Council for Cultural Affairs also noted the deep plan and the garden laid out in front.

Yurihonjo City describes the exposed beam-and-post gable with a lean-to eave below it as characteristic of merchant houses on Ishiwaki Street. The Yamakichi Main House is valuable as a clear, surviving example of that local type.

What to Look For

Start with the gable end of the Yamakichi Main House. Inside the triangle, horizontal beams alternate with short vertical posts set on top of them, layer upon layer. The structure itself becomes the decoration, and this is the part the Agency for Cultural Affairs calls imposing.

Because the house is set back behind its garden, you can take in the whole gable at once from the street. Compare it with the shop next door, which has a hipped roof: beside it, the sharp triangle of the main house stands out even more.

The Agency's database also holds a photograph of the chanoma, the family living room, looking toward a Buddhist altar room on the left and a reception room on the right. It shows how the six rooms open into one another.

Visiting the Main House

No public interior access to the Yamakichi Miso and Soy Sauce Brewery Main House is announced (checked September 28, 2026). The brewery accepts visits by reservation, but the listing does not say whether the house is included, so ask when you book.

The exterior can be seen from Ishiwaki Street. For the best view of the gable, stand on the street directly to the south. This is private property, so please stay on the street and do not enter the garden.

Directions to the brewery and how to book a visit are covered on the Yamakichi Miso and Soy Sauce Brewery page.
