About the Hakkakutei Bath Building
The Hakkakutei Bath Building (八鶴亭浴室棟, Hakkakutei Yokushitsutō) is a single-storey timber bathhouse of the early Shōwa period on the southern edge of the inn's site by Hakkaku Lake in Tōgane, Togane City, Chiba Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on April 28, 2009. A covered corridor links it to the New Building, and the Billiards Building adjoins it on the east.
The roof is hipped and covered in pantiles, while the eaves and the corridor are roofed in sheet metal. At 117 m², the Hakkakutei Bath Building covers more ground than the three-storey New Building. It sits behind the three buildings that face the lake, so guests walked from their rooms along the corridor to reach the baths.
Inside the Bath Building
Inside the Hakkakutei Bath Building, a changing room, a large communal bath, a boiler room and a family bath are arranged in an L. The rooms guests used and the plant that heated the water were kept under one roof.
A family bath, separate from the main communal one, allowed a party to bathe privately, a sign of the care an inn of this standing took over its baths. The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives the date only as the early Shōwa period and records no alterations.
The Decorated Family Bath
The Hakkakutei Bath Building was registered as a structure that has become a model of its type, and the reason is the decoration of the family bath. Its floor is tiled in a chequerboard pattern, and the inner walls are pierced with openings, some in the sankaibishi shape of three diamonds stacked one above another, others perfectly round.
Both the floor underfoot and the walls in view from the water were given design attention, which is what lifts this small room above a purely practical bathroom.
The sources differ slightly over how to write the diamond motif: the Agency for Cultural Affairs and Chiba Prefecture use one set of characters (三階菱), Togane City another (三蓋菱).
Seeing the Bath Building
The Hakkakutei Bath Building does not face the lakeshore road and stands behind the three lakeside buildings. To see the family bath you will need to come on one of the irregular public open days held by the volunteer group Minna no Hakkakukan. We found no specific notice of whether the bath building is included on open days, so ask the group before you go (checked October 2026).
The baths are no longer in use, and bathing is not possible. Directions and general visiting conditions are on the Hakkakutei page.
