Kazusa-bori: Reaching Deep Groundwater With Bamboo, an Iron Pipe, and Human Muscle

About five and a half meters. That was a good day's progress for a Kazusa-bori crew sinking a well by hand through the plateaus of central Chiba. There was no engine and no modern drill rig, only a chisel-tipped iron pipe, lengths of split bamboo, and the weight of the tools themselves driven downward by people working the rhythm of the bore.

Kazusa-bori (上総掘り) is not an object you can put in a display case. It is a body of knowledge and skill, the way a small team coaxes a narrow shaft through clay, sand, and gravel until it strikes a water-bearing layer far below the surface. The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered "The Technique of Kazusa-bori" as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property on March 15, 2006, recognizing it as a folk technique of production and livelihood. The method takes its name from the old Kazusa region of present-day Chiba, where it was refined, and from there it spread across Japan and well beyond it.

How the Method Works

At the center of the technique is the hori-tekkan, a slender drilling pipe of iron roughly six to eight meters long and only a few centimeters across. A cylindrical cutting bit called a sakiwa is fitted to its lower end, while the upper end connects to a chain of higo, flexible strips of moso bamboo split to about two centimeters wide. The crew grips a wooden handle, the shumoku, and thrusts the pipe down again and again, crushing the bottom of the hole a little with each stroke. As the shaft deepens, more bamboo strips are spliced on to extend the line.

Two clever pieces of engineering make the system work. Inside the bit sits a simple valve, the koshita, that opens as the pipe drives down so that loosened debris is drawn up into the pipe; when the pipe fills, the crew hauls it out by winding up the bamboo and empties it, then lowers a tin baler called a suiko to scoop out whatever debris remains in the hole. To keep the walls from collapsing, workers pour in nebamizu, a clay-thickened water that softens the ground, cools the heated bit, and coats the bore so it holds its shape.

Lifting and lowering a pipe weighted with debris from deep underground would be brutal work without leverage, so the crew connects the bamboo to a springy bent pole, the haneki, whose recoil shares the load, and winds the long bamboo line onto a large wheel-shaped wooden frame, the higoguruma. The drilling itself looks repetitive, yet it demands constant judgment. Hard rock or gravel calls for bits with transverse blades and a forceful pounding stroke known as tataki-bori; loose sand calls for sukui-bori, in which the worker lifts the pipe just before it strikes bottom and stirs the sand up into the pipe. Reading the ground is the most prized skill of all. The water-bearing stratum is called shiki, and an experienced driller gauges the quality and volume of water below by studying the color and dampness of the sand that comes up in the cuttings.

From an Iron Bar to a Strip of Bamboo

The Kazusa region is mostly high tableland cut by deep river valleys, so the fields and villages on the plateaus sat well above the streams that ran below them. Reliable irrigation and drinking water were a constant worry, and the local geology, soft and largely free of bedrock, made digging feasible. Those conditions pushed local people to find a better way to reach the groundwater beneath their feet.

The earlier approach, brought from the Kansai area by way of Edo in the late Edo period, raised a tall timber tower and used levers to lift a long, heavy iron bar, then let it drop so its weight punched into the earth. It worked, but slowly. Depths rarely passed about twenty ken (roughly thirty-six meters), the labor was enormous, and the falling bar caused frequent accidents. Around 1882 local well-diggers tried a lighter oak rod in place of the iron bar, which let a team of five or six reach about a hundred meters. The real breakthrough came when they paired the drilling pipe with split-bamboo strips and the baling tube. A crew of just three or four could now push a bore far deeper using nothing but their own strength, and by the mid-1880s the full system had taken shape. Local accounts credit diggers such as Ikeda Hisakichi and Ikeda Tokuzo of the Koito area and Omura Yasunosuke of the Obitsu valley with leading these improvements.

Word of the method spread fast, since the gear was cheap and the basic skill could be learned quickly. Farmers who picked it up became seasoned professionals and traveled to dig wells elsewhere, and across the Koito, Obitsu, Minato, and Yoro river basins, well-digging supported full-time craftsmen into the mid-1950s. Reports of how deep these hand-dug bores could go vary widely, with figures of several hundred meters cited for the deepest, a striking reach for a tool kit a few people could carry.

Why It Earned National Recognition

The designation rests on two grounds: that Kazusa-bori shows the process by which a technology evolved, and that it reflects the character of a particular region. Both are easy to see. The method captures a clear line of development from a brute-force iron bar to a refined, leverage-and-judgment craft, and it grew directly out of the water problems of the Kazusa plateaus.

Its influence reached much further than well water. The same hand-drilling principles fed into the search for oil and other underground resources and helped lay the groundwork for the mechanized drilling that followed, which is part of why the technique matters for understanding the history of boring in Japan. It also traveled abroad. A British teacher named Francis James Norman, who came to Japan in 1888 to teach English in Chiba, was so taken with the method that he published an account of it titled Kazusa System in India in 1902. In later decades the technique was carried to parts of Asia and Africa, where its low cost and lack of need for machinery made it valuable for reaching water in places power equipment could not easily go, and that work continues today.

Seeing Kazusa-bori Today

The best place to feel what this technique gave the region is the old castle town of Kururi in Kimitsu City. Rain falling on the Kiyosumi and Mitsuishi hills filters down through the strata and rises again through artesian wells sunk by the Kazusa method, and around two hundred of them still flow here. Several near JR Kururi Station are open to the public, including a water-drawing plaza by the local exchange center where water runs around the clock and people drive in from across the prefecture to fill their bottles. In 2008 Kururi was chosen for the Heisei list of Japan's hundred fine waters, the only site in Chiba to receive the honor. The water feeds local soba kitchens and several sake breweries, so a walk through town easily turns into a tasting.

To understand the drilling itself, visit the Kururi Castle Museum, which displays a Kazusa-bori well-digging tower, and the Sodegaura City Local Museum, the base of the Kazusa-bori Technique Preservation Research Society. Members of the society build the traditional tools and carry out real drilling, and they cooperate with the museum's education programs, so it is sometimes possible to watch the craft in action rather than only in photographs. Near Kazusa High School in Kimitsu, a stone marker raised by the local board of education in 1962 records the area as the birthplace of the method.

Kururi sits near the center of the Boso Peninsula and is reached on the JR Kururi Line; the wells cluster within walking distance of Kururi Station, and a car helps for the spots farther out.
