A Post-Town Hatago Rebuilt in the Meiji Period
The Maruya Main Building (丸屋) is a former hatago lodging house of about 1897 at Kamagaya-juku on the Kioroshi road in Kamagaya, Kamagaya City, Chiba Prefecture, which in 2020 was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a two-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 133 square metres, owned by Nono Village Co., Ltd.
Kamagaya City notes that it was rebuilt around 1897 after a fire in 1893.
Structure
According to the Agency, it is a two-storey hipped, pantiled timber building five bays by seven.
It was altered, including its plan, after it ceased to operate as a hatago in 1902, but its posts and beams remain heavy and solid.
What to Look For
The Agency notes that the lifting shutters at the front entrance and the eaves preserve the look of a post-town hatago.
Kamagaya City adds that it was remodelled as a home in the late Meiji period and converted into apartments in 1956.

Kamagaya City notes that it is a private residence and the grounds cannot be visited.
