The "Shining Hall" of Heizo
The Saiganji Temple Amida Hall (西願寺阿弥陀堂) is a thatched Amida hall of 1495 in Heizo, Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture, and was designated an Important Cultural Property on May 24, 1916 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records three bays by three, single-storey, hipped and thatched, designated together with a shrine cabinet; designation number 00664.
The 1916 date in the Agency record is that of its designation under the former law.
Built by Carpenters from Kamakura
According to Chiba Prefecture, the temple's short history says the Amida Hall was built by the lord of Heizo Castle to guard the inauspicious north-east, and that, gilded above and lacquered red below, it shone so brightly that it was called the Shining Hall of Heizo. An ink inscription found during dismantling repairs in 1927 showed that carpenters from Kamakura built it in 1495.
The hall is three bays square under a hipped thatched roof, and the shrine cabinet inside, of the same style and date, is designated with it (Agency for Cultural Affairs; Chiba Prefecture).
Why It Is an Important Cultural Property
The Agency's record has no commentary; the form, date and shrine cabinet set out what was designated. Chiba Prefecture calls it the most authentic Zen-style building in the prefecture.

Visiting
It is owned by Saiganji Temple (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Chiba Prefecture says it has no closing days; take the Kominato bus bound for Otaki depot from Kazusa-Ushiku Station on the Kominato Railway to Amidabata, then walk about 3 minutes. There is free parking for 20 cars.
