The Newest Building in an Old Compound
Toyonotsuru Sake Brewery Shop (豊乃鶴酒造店舗, Toyonotsuru Shuzō Tenpo) is a two-storey timber shop building of the early Shōwa period at Shincho in Otaki Town, Isumi District, Chiba Prefecture, entered on the national list as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 28 October 2011. The Agency for Cultural Affairs places its construction between 1926 and 1945.
At 66 square metres it is the smallest of the six registered items at this address, and it is also the youngest by a wide margin. The main house beside it dates from 1874 and was registered separately in 1999; the brewing buildings behind it are of Meiji date. Toyonotsuru Sake Brewery Shop arrived two generations later, and its detailing shows it.
The plot occupies a corner, and the shop sits at the centre of it rather than on either street line. It faces east, presenting its gable end to the approach.
Gable to the Front, Awning Below
The roof is Irimoya-zukuri, the hipped-gable form, laid with Sangawara-buki pantiles, and the building is entered on the gable side, an arrangement called Tsumairi. Most townhouses along a commercial street turn their long side to the road; putting the gable forward gives a narrower, taller face and a stronger sense of a single object standing free.
Two horizontal elements soften that verticality. A Geya lean-to runs across the front of the ground floor, and a separate eave canopy projects at first-floor level. Between them they divide the elevation into bands and provide shelter at the door, which is what a shop wants.
Inside, the plan is the standard commercial one: the mise, the selling floor, occupies the front, with living rooms set behind it. What lifts the building above the ordinary is upstairs.
The Room Above the Shop
The principal room on the first floor was fitted out as a Zashiki of some refinement. It has a Tokonoma and shelving, the standard equipment of a formal reception room, and a round window cut into the wall.
A circular opening is not a casual choice. It belongs to the vocabulary of tea architecture and of the Sukiya-zukuri manner, and finding one over a provincial sake shop says that the household wanted a room capable of receiving guests properly, not merely a floor above the till. The register entry singles out the effect as a light and elegant one.
This is the argument for the building's registration. Accepted in 2011 under the criterion for structures contributing to the historic character of the national landscape, Toyonotsuru Sake Brewery Shop demonstrates how a working merchant family of the early Shōwa years still built to a standard, and how a Shōwa insertion could sit among Meiji fabric without breaking it. Five buildings and the brick chimney were admitted together on that date.
Visiting Toyonotsuru Sake Brewery Shop
The east elevation, the gable front with its lean-to and canopy, can be seen from outside without arrangement or payment. Because the building stands back at the centre of the corner plot rather than hard against the pavement, step around to find the angle where the whole gable is clear of the buildings in front of it.
The interior, including the upstairs room with the round window, is not open for general viewing. The Chiba Sake Brewers Association records that this brewery accepts visits and offers tasting; both are arranged in advance by telephone on 0470-82-2026. The company does not publish opening hours, so calling ahead settles whether anyone will be present. Sake carrying the Otakijō label is sold at the premises.
Exterior photographs from the public road are unrestricted. Within the gate the ground is private, so ask before photographing.
Otaki Station is roughly 600 metres north, about 8 minutes on foot, but do not plan around a train. The Isumi Railway suspended services across its entire line following a derailment in October 2024, replacement buses now serve every station, and the operator expects to reopen the Ohara to Otaki section around autumn 2027. Check its service page before you travel. A small number of parking spaces are available.
