About the Uehara Family Residence Stone Storehouse
The Uehara Family Residence Stone Storehouse (上原家住宅石蔵, Uehara-ke Jūtaku Ishigura) is an early Taishō storehouse built of Ōya stone on the west side of a former village headman's estate in Kirigasaku, Noda City, Chiba Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2019.
It stands towards the north end of the west side of the plot, facing east into the grounds. The walls are Ōya stone, the single-storey building has a gabled roof of pantiles, and the building area is 33 m². It is the smallest of the four registered Uehara buildings and the only one from the Taishō era.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates the Uehara Family Residence Stone Storehouse to the early Taishō era, 1912 to 1918 in its year field. The Shoin, Front Gate and Storehouse all belong to the mid-Meiji era, so the Stone Storehouse came roughly a generation later.
Doorway, High Windows and a Double Band
A single doorway opens at the centre of the east front. High in each gable wall is a small window, and a Hachimaki band runs round the eaves in two tiers. Beyond those openings the stone walls are closed, which gives the building the guarded look of a storehouse.
Inside the Uehara Family Residence Stone Storehouse there is one room. Part of the floor near the door is left as packed earth, and the rest is boarded. The roof is carried on a gasshō frame, pairs of rafters leaning together to meet at the ridge.
It is a plain, one-room store: stone walls, a simple roof frame and a strip of earth floor by the door, presumably for loading, with goods kept on the boards behind.
A Record of a Modern Fashion
The Uehara Family Residence Stone Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The agency calls it an outbuilding that records a modern fashion in the farmhouse compounds of Shimōsa, the old province covering what is now northern Chiba Prefecture and neighbouring areas.
The comparison with the estate's other storehouse makes the point. In the mid-Meiji Storehouse the Ōya stone is only a base under clay walls; in the early Taishō Stone Storehouse the walls themselves are stone. The two stand facing east along the same west side, showing how the headman's family added a newer kind of storehouse as fashions in the district changed.
Seeing the Uehara Family Residence Stone Storehouse
The Uehara Family Residence Stone Storehouse belongs to a private home, and its interior is not open. Noda City states that the Uehara Family Residence is lived in and cannot be visited inside.
The Stone Storehouse faces into the grounds from the west side, so its doorway can probably be seen only from inside the estate. How much is visible from the road has not been checked on site. Please photograph only from the public road. Directions are on the Uehara Family Residence (Noda) page.
