What Ōya stone is
Ōya stone, ōya-ishi, is a tuff quarried around the Ōya district of Utsunomiya in Tochigi Prefecture. According to the Geological Survey of Japan, it is cut from pumice-rich volcanic rock of the Ōya Formation, laid down in the sea about 15 million years ago in the Miocene. It is a pale greenish grey, and small brown flecks scattered through it, known locally as miso, are its most recognisable feature.
Light and soft, it is easy to quarry and carve, and it resists fire. Utsunomiya City's Japan Heritage story explains that because the stone withstands fire and moderates humidity, it was used for the storehouses of merchants making miso, sake and soy sauce. Beyond storehouses it served for fences, retaining walls, gateposts and exterior and interior cladding, and in the modern era it was adopted for churches and public buildings.
Reading the records and the stone
Records distinguish how the stone is used. At the former Nagashima family house, the rice, front and rear storehouses are two-storey stone buildings with walls of laid Ōya stone and timber truss roofs. The outer boundary wall of the same property has six courses of squared Ōya stone on a base of rough stone, topped with an Ōya stone coping. The long gatehouse wall, by contrast, is a timber building finished in white plaster with a lower band of Ōya stone facing. Laid stone forms the structure itself, while stone facing is a veneer on a timber wall, and the two are different constructions.
On site, look for the brown flecks on the surface. Whether the stone is structural or a facing can often be seen at windows and doors by looking at the thickness of the wall: if the reveals are stone throughout, it is laid masonry; if only the face is stone with timber or plaster behind, it is facing.
