The north gate of the keep compound
Matsuyama Castle Inner Gate (松山城内門, Uchimon) is a single-storey gatehouse standing between the great keep and the Entrance Tamon Turret in the keep compound of Matsuyama Castle in Marunouchi, Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, rebuilt in the late Showa era and entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on September 10, 2019.
The compound is a closed quadrangle with a single way in, and inside it the route to the keep is broken by two gates. This is the northern one. The Sujigane Gate does the same work on the south side, so the two face each other across the great keep, each guarding one approach to the courtyard.
The frontage is 3.2 metres, one bay with a doorway and a side wicket, and the upper storey is a covered passage linking the buildings on either side. The gate that stood here was damaged in the arson attack of 1933. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records the present structure as built in 1967, while Matsuyama City gives May 27, 1968 as the completion date for the nine rebuilt structures of the compound.
A boxed court, and a register category
Together with the Shikirimon gate, Matsuyama Castle Inner Gate encloses a masugata on the north side of the great keep. The word means a measuring box, and the shape is exactly that: a walled rectangle in which an attacker who has broken one gate finds himself stopped in front of a second, exposed to fire from the walls around him. Matsuyama Castle uses the device repeatedly on the way up the hill, and this is the last of them.
One small point of classification is worth noting. In the national register, this gate and the Sujigane Gate are recorded under the heading of other constructed works rather than buildings, while the seven turrets and halls registered with them on the same day are listed as buildings. The distinction is administrative, but it reflects how a gate is understood: an element of the fortification line rather than a structure with rooms.
The Important Cultural Property designation held by twenty-one structures at Matsuyama Castle does not extend to rebuildings. The registration created in 1996, for works contributing to the historic landscape of Japan, does. The reconstruction followed basic designs prepared by the Ministry of Education after the surviving structures were listed in 1935, drawn from a survey made before the fire.
What to look for
Pass under the gate and stop. The upper storey has an opening at each end, and both are fitted with a pair of tsuchido, doors built up in earth and plaster over a timber core. Shut, they seal the passage against fire and against anyone who has got into the neighbouring building. The compound is a ring of structures that touch, and these doors are the valves in it.
Outside, the finish carries over from the great keep without interruption: boarding at the base of the wall, Shikkui plaster above and across the underside of the eaves. Because the gate is squeezed between two taller buildings, its roof has no gable end. The ridge simply runs from one to the other with eaves falling to both sides, covered in Hongawarabuki tiles.
Compare it with the Sujigane Gate on the south, whose posts are sheathed in iron plate. Matsuyama Castle Inner Gate has no such armour, though it is 0.2 metres wider. The two are near twins with different emphases, and seeing them within a few minutes of each other on the circuit makes the difference legible.
Visiting
The gate is passed through on the ticketed circuit inside the keep compound. Opening hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with closing at 5:30 p.m. in August and 4:30 p.m. in December and January, last admission 30 minutes before closing, and one annual closure on the third Wednesday of December. Admission is 520 yen for adults and 160 yen for elementary school pupils.
From Matsuyama City Station or JR Matsuyama Station, the Iyotetsu tram reaches Okaido in roughly 10 minutes, and the Shinonome-guchi ropeway station is 5 minutes on foot from there. A return ticket for the ropeway or chair lift is 520 yen for adults and 260 yen for children, and the upper station is a 10 minute walk below the ticket office. Walking up from Shinonome-guchi takes about 30 minutes; the whole visit generally runs to about 90 minutes.
Personal photography is unrestricted. Live streaming, drones and large equipment are not permitted, and commercial filming requires prior application to the Matsuyama Castle office. The passage under the gate has a raised sill, so watch your footing.
