What is the Former Standard Oil Company of New York Warehouse North Building?
The Former Standard Oil Company of New York Warehouse North Building (旧紐育スタンダード石油会社倉庫北棟, Kyū Nyūyōku Sutandādo Sekiyu Gaisha Sōko Kitatō) is a single-storey brick oil warehouse built in 1905 in Kanegasaki-cho, Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2009.
The building stands on the northern half of the site with its west gable turned toward the sea. It is a long, narrow box, 35 m along the ridge and 15 m across, covering 513 m², under a gabled roof of pantiles. Its twin, the South Building, runs parallel 3 m away.
Since 2015 the Former Standard Oil Company of New York Warehouse North Building has served as the diorama hall of the Tsuruga Red Brick Warehouse, housing a model railway and harbor that recreate Tsuruga between the late Meiji and early Showa eras.
Why the North Building was registered
The Former Standard Oil Company of New York Warehouse North Building was registered for contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles it out as one of the few industrial structures that still recall the modern port of Tsuruga.
The agency's note on the structure is about the walls. Pilasters, the thickened strips that stiffen a brick wall, were placed on the outside, leaving the inner face completely flat. The agency explains this as a choice made for storage.
In a warehouse stacked with wooden crates of canned oil, being able to push the crates hard against the walls probably made a real difference to how much it could hold. A flat inner wall lets rows of crates run cleanly from corner to corner. That is why the walls of the Former Standard Oil Company of New York Warehouse North Building look so different inside and out.
What to look for at the North Building
From outside, the Former Standard Oil Company of New York Warehouse North Building shows a row of pilasters marching along each long wall, casting vertical bands of shadow across the brickwork. Low, raking light brings them out best.
Step inside and the picture changes. With flat walls and not a single column, the 35 m interior is one open room. The official website describes the centerpiece, the Nostalgiorama, as about 27 m long and up to about 7.5 m deep; it rebuilds the old town at roughly 1:80 scale from a reconstructed map of Tsuruga as it stood when air raids struck in 1945. A second-floor viewing deck lets visitors look down over the whole model.
A 27 m model can sit in one piece only because nothing interrupts the floor of the Former Standard Oil Company of New York Warehouse North Building. From the viewing deck, look past the model to the brick wall behind it: the flat surface built for stacking crates now serves as its backdrop.
The roof is not original. The national database dates the building to 1905 with repairs in 1981 and 1983, and the warehouse's own timeline records that heavy snow brought down part of the roof in 1981 and that the roof was re-covered in 1983. The timeline does not say which building collapsed, but the tiled roof of the Former Standard Oil Company of New York Warehouse North Building is the result of those works.
Visiting the North Building
The interior of the Former Standard Oil Company of New York Warehouse North Building is open as the diorama hall. Admission is 400 yen for adults and 200 yen for elementary-school children and younger, with children under 3 free. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with last entry at 5:00 p.m., and the hall is closed on Wednesdays (or the following day when Wednesday is a public holiday) and from December 30 to January 2.
The exterior can be viewed for free from within the grounds. Face the west gable from the seaward side, then walk along the building to see the pilasters up close. The official website says nothing about photography inside the hall, so ask at the entrance before taking pictures.
