What Is the Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine Tower Gate?

The Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine Tower Gate (水田天満宮楼門, Mizuta Tenmangū rōmon) is a late Edo-period timber gate at the entrance to Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine in Chikugo City, Fukuoka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on August 6, 2025.

A romon is a gate with a full upper story, and this one is three bays wide with a passage through each bay. It has a hip-and-gable Irimoya-zukuri roof laid with hongawara tiles, two stories of timber, and a building area of 24 square meters. It faces south, so anyone walking up the approach to the main hall passes through it first.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates the Tower Gate only to the late Edo period, giving a span of 1830 to 1868; no record of the exact year has been found. The gate was repaired in 2000.

Why the Tower Gate Was Registered

The Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine Tower Gate was registered, as number 40-0238, under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency's commentary calls it an ornate gate that forms the core of the local townscape.

Most buildings in the precinct are single-story, so the two tiers of the Tower Gate mark the entrance clearly. The East and West Gates, registered the same day, close off the sides of the grounds; the Tower Gate is the shrine's front.

What to Look for at the Tower Gate

The posts are square with broad chamfered corners. On both stories the bracketing is of the plainest kind, a large bearing block topped by a single bracket arm, and the eaves have two layers of closely spaced rafters.

A veranda runs around the upper story, edged with a railing whose ends sweep upward. Seen from below, the tiled roof and the line of the railing stack one above the other.

The detail most worth finding on the lower story is the set of lion-head beam ends painted vermilion. These carved Kibana were the first feature the Council for Cultural Affairs cited when it recommended the Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine Tower Gate for registration in March 2025. The Agency's database also shows carvings around the rear roof, photographed from the northeast, so turn around once inside the grounds and look up.

On the night of the Sentomyo lantern festival every August 25, the plaza in front of the gate hosts an evening fair and fills with people.

Visiting the Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine Tower Gate

The Tower Gate is the main entrance to the grounds of Mizuta Tenmangu, and worshippers walk through it freely. View the front and its lion heads from the approach on the south side, and the rear carvings from inside the precinct. None of the shrine, city or prefectural sources mention access to the upper story.

No clear photography policy from the shrine was found. During rituals, or when other worshippers would be in the frame, ask at the shrine office first. Directions to the shrine and general visiting information are on the Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine page.
