What Is the Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine East Gate?

The Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine East Gate (水田天満宮東門, Mizuta Tenmangū higashimon) is a four-legged gate built in 1868 at the middle of the east side of Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine in Chikugo City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on August 6, 2025.

In a Shikyakumon, or four-legged gate, the two main posts that carry the doors are braced front and back by four auxiliary posts. The East Gate has a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof of hongawara tiles and a frontage of 2.7 meters.

The year 1868 was the fourth and last year of the Keio era; in its ninth month the era name changed to Meiji. The Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine East Gate was therefore built in the final year of the Edo period.

Why the East Gate Was Registered

The Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine East Gate was registered, as number 40-0239, under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as plain and sturdy throughout, the gate that anchors the eastern face of the precinct.

It relies on proportion rather than carving: posts, tie beams and brackets give it its shape, and its tiled roof marks the opening in the shrine's east boundary.

What to Look for at the East Gate

Start with the posts. The main posts that hold the doors are round, the auxiliary posts behind them are square, and the two kinds are locked together by a head tie beam and a Nageshi rail at waist height.

The bracketing is a large bearing block with a bracket arm whose sides are carved with flowing scroll lines. The eaves have two layers of closely spaced rafters.

On the gable ends, a curved tie beam supports a vase-shaped strut flanked by Oigata scroll boards. Step underneath the Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine East Gate and look up: there is no ceiling, so the rafters and the underside of the eaves are left exposed as a finished surface, and the Agency's database includes a photograph of exactly this view. Plank doors hang in the opening.

Both of the shrine's side gates are four-legged gates, but the West Gate, built 17 years earlier, layers stepped brackets and carving, while the East Gate keeps to the simpler bracket. Walking from one to the other makes the contrast easy to see.

Visiting the Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine East Gate

The East Gate is the entrance on the east side of the grounds, and its exterior can be seen freely whenever you visit. Look at the front from outside to the east, then stand beneath it for the exposed eaves. The shrine publishes no hours for opening and closing the plank doors.

No clear photography policy from Mizuta Tenmangu was found, so ask at the shrine office during rituals. Directions and general visiting information are on the Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine page.
