What Is the Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine West Gate?
The Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine West Gate (水田天満宮西門, Mizuta Tenmangū nishimon) is a four-legged gate built in 1851 on the west side of Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine in Chikugo City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on August 6, 2025.
It has a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof of hongawara tiles and a frontage of 3.1 meters, and short flanking walls roofed with simpler pantiles extend from either side. Of the three gates registered together, it is the oldest with a known date.
Why the West Gate Was Registered
The Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine West Gate, registration number 40-0240, was registered as a model of design. The Tower Gate and the East Gate were registered for their contribution to the landscape, so the West Gate is the only one of the three recognized for its design in its own right.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out the carved boards beneath its eaves and calls it a richly decorated gate.
What to Look for at the West Gate
The interest lies under the eaves. The bracketing is Degumi, in which the bracket arms project one step forward from the line of the posts to carry the eaves. The sloping gaps between neighboring bracket sets are closed with boards, a detail called Shirin, and those boards are carved: a fine all-over background pattern, with plum branches and waves in relief on top.
The plum is the flower most closely associated with Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of Mizuta Tenmangu. Stand under the gate and look up at an angle toward the eaves to pick out the branches and the lines of the waves. The Agency's database also has a photograph of carving under the roof on the rear, eastern side.
The frame matches the East Gate: round main posts and square auxiliary posts, joined by a head tie beam and a Nageshi rail at waist height. The eaves have two layers of closely spaced rafters, and on the gable ends a curved tie beam carries a vase-shaped strut flanked by Oigata scroll boards.
Visiting the Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine West Gate
The West Gate is the entrance on the west side of the grounds, and its exterior can be seen freely whenever you visit. Look at the front from outside to the west, at the carved boards from directly beneath, and at the rear carving from inside the precinct to the east. The carving sits high under the eaves, so the details are easiest to follow in daylight on a clear day.
No clear photography policy from Mizuta Tenmangu was found, so ask at the shrine office during rituals. Directions and general visiting information are on the Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine page.
