The Moji Golf Club Clubhouse North Building
The Moji Golf Club Clubhouse North Building (門司ゴルフ倶楽部クラブハウス北棟, Kita-tō) is the service block of the clubhouse at Moji Golf Club in Kishi, Moji-ku, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture; built in 1960 together with the South Building, it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2014. It is a single-storey reinforced concrete building with a partial basement and a sheet-iron roof, covering 434 square meters, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs gives its plan as a long strip 40 meters east to west and 9.1 meters north to south.
The Moji Golf Club Clubhouse North Building runs parallel to the South Building on its north side, and the club's registration notes say the two meet at the west end. Inside are the players' baths, a room for the women caddies and a staff canteen, with the machine room in the basement.
Why the Moji Golf Club Clubhouse North Building Was Registered
The Moji Golf Club Clubhouse North Building is registration number 40-0112 and, like the South Building and the Start House, was registered as a structure that serves as a model of design. What the national description singles out is the plan. Service functions such as the caddies' room are gathered into one well-equipped block, the players' baths are placed in the same block, and yet the rooms are arranged so that players and caddies never cross paths.
Put staff rooms and guest rooms under one roof and the two streams of people tend to collide in corridors and doorways. Avoiding that inside a strip only 9.1 meters deep is the achievement the registration recognizes. When the club commissioned the clubhouse, two of its stated aims were a practical flow through the building and proper facilities for the staff. The North Building is where both aims had to be met at once.
Its exterior speaks the same language as the main block. According to the club's notes, the columns are expressed on both the north and south faces, with waist-high windows set in a continuous row between them, so the structural frame doubles as the pattern of the elevation.
The Changed Roof of the Moji Golf Club Clubhouse North Building
The roof is the one part of the Moji Golf Club Clubhouse North Building that is not as built. The club's registration notes say that, apart from the bath wing, it originally had a flat roof, and that a gabled roof now sits on top. None of the sources consulted say when the gable was added.
As first built, a low, flat-topped block tucked behind a 2-storey building with deep eaves made the hierarchy between the two plain to see. The later gable blurs that contrast a little.
Seeing the Moji Golf Club Clubhouse North Building
Much of the Moji Golf Club Clubhouse North Building is given over to staff rooms such as the caddies' room and canteen, and it is not open to the public (as of October 2026). Golfers using the course enter it mainly to use the baths after a round. The club's information page notes that players on twilight rounds cannot use the lockers or baths.
From outside, look at the west end where it joins the South Building, and along the long faces where the columns repeat at even intervals. The club publishes no rules on photography, so ask first. Directions and booking conditions are on the Moji Golf Club page.
