Knotty Log Posts and a Bamboo Ceiling

The Suisui Hundred-Year Garden Inn (Former Ryokan Tagawa Annex) Connecting Corridor (百年庭園の宿翠水(旧旅館田川離れ)渡り廊下) is a corridor linking three sukiya-style annex buildings of 1962 in Furusenbamachi, Kokurakita Ward, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on February 17, 2022 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a single-storey timber corridor with a copper roof and a building area of 30 square metres, altered in 1982; registration number 40-0199.

Diagonal Tile Floor and Bamboo Ceiling

The connecting corridor is a single-storey timber passage with a gabled copper roof that joins the three sukiya-style annex buildings of a high-class inn (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Its floor is of flat tiles laid diagonally, its knotty log posts stand on foundation stones and its ceiling is of bamboo nailed close together.

Rustic in feeling yet plain and elegant, it plays a modest but important role (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Kitakyushu City says that, linking Genkai, Kiku and Sugao, it has shared in the annex's role of receiving distinguished visitors.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered the corridor as a model of design.
