Suisui Hundred-Year Garden Inn (Former Ryokan Tagawa Annex)

The Suisui Hundred-Year Garden Inn (百年庭園の宿翠水), the former annex of Ryokan Tagawa in Furusenbamachi, Kokurakita Ward, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is the annex of a high-class inn whose three buildings of 1962, Genkai, Kiku and Sugao, and the corridor linking them were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on February 17, 2022 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). All four were altered in 1982 and are owned by MyStays Hotel Management Co., Ltd.

Kitakyushu City says the annex rooms of Ryokan Tagawa, the city's leading high-class inn, received many distinguished guests and served as the city's place for receiving visitors.

The Four Properties

The three buildings are single-storey sukiya rooms facing the pond garden: Genkai to the west uses bamboo and natural logs in a hermitage manner, Kiku in the centre seems to float on the pond like a small boat with its deep eaves and railed veranda, and Sugao brings new ideas such as curtains between shoji and glass doors into a shoin-style design (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The corridor joins the three with a diagonal tile floor, knotty log posts and a bamboo ceiling. The Agency registered all four as models of design, as modern sukiya buildings that add modern fittings and bold design to the traditional sukiya composition. Each property is described on its own page.
