Bamboo, Logs and a Modern Ceiling Grid

The Suisui Hundred-Year Garden Inn (Former Ryokan Tagawa Annex) Genkai (百年庭園の宿翠水(旧旅館田川離れ)玄海) is a modern sukiya annex in the rustic hermitage manner of 1962 in Furusenbamachi, Kokurakita Ward, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on February 17, 2022 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a copper roof and a building area of 92 square metres, altered in 1982; registration number 40-0198.

Bamboo and Natural Logs

Genkai is the westernmost of the three annex buildings of a high-class inn facing the pond garden; it is a single-storey timber building with a hip-and-gable roof, partly gabled, in copper sheet (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

It makes much use of bamboo and natural logs, aiming at the classic, austere hermitage style, while features such as ceiling battens laid out like a broad coffered grid mark it as a bold modern sukiya building (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Kitakyushu City says the annex rooms of Ryokan Tagawa, the city's leading high-class inn, received many distinguished guests and served as the city's place for receiving visitors.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered the annex as a model of design.
