An Annex Like a Boat on the Pond

The Suisui Hundred-Year Garden Inn (Former Ryokan Tagawa Annex) Kiku (百年庭園の宿翠水(旧旅館田川離れ)企救) is a modern sukiya annex that seems to float on the pond like a small boat of 1962 in Furusenbamachi, Kokurakita Ward, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on February 17, 2022 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a copper roof and a building area of 105 square metres, altered in 1982; registration number 40-0197.

A Projecting Veranda with Railings

Kiku is the central building of the three annex buildings of a high-class inn facing the pond garden; it is a single-storey timber building with a hip-and-gable roof, partly gabled, in copper sheet (Agency for Cultural Affairs). With its deep eaves and a projecting veranda with railings, it looks like a small boat floating on the pond.

It is a modern sukiya building that adds modern fittings and bold design to an orthodox sukiya composition (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Kitakyushu City says the annex rooms of Ryokan Tagawa, the city's leading high-class inn, received many distinguished guests and served as the city's place for receiving visitors.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered the annex as a model of design.
