Curtains between Shoji and Glass
The Suisui Hundred-Year Garden Inn (Former Ryokan Tagawa Annex) Sugao (百年庭園の宿翠水（旧旅館田川離れ）菅生) is a modern sukiya annex in the formal shoin manner of 1962 in Furusenbamachi, Kokurakita Ward, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on February 17, 2022 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a copper roof and a building area of 126 square metres, altered in 1982; registration number 40-0196.
Curtains between Shoji and Glass Doors
Sugao is an annex of one of the leading high-class inns of Kitakyushu and has received many distinguished guests (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is single-storey with a hip-and-gable roof, partly gabled, in copper sheet, and Kitakyushu City places it at the east end of the annex.
Within a traditional shoin-style sukiya design it sets curtains between the shoji screens and the glass doors, an ambitious attempt to form a new style of modern sukiya (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Kitakyushu City says the annex rooms of Ryokan Tagawa, the city's leading high-class inn, received many distinguished guests and served as the city's place for receiving visitors.
