An Open, Tall-Storeyed Inn Building of 1896

The Nakamuraya Ryokan New Building (なかむらや旅館新館) is a hot-spring inn of around 1896 in Iizakamachi, Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on April 21, 1998 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a three-storey and partly single-storey storehouse-style building with a tiled roof, covering 78 square metres; registration number 07-0010.

A New Building in Contrast to the Main

The new building of Nakamuraya Ryokan is said to date from shortly after the present owners' ancestors began running the inn (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Like the main building it is a three-storey storehouse-style building, but every floor has the same plan and the upper two are tall and open, a striking contrast with the main building (Agency for Cultural Affairs). An old storehouse of the same age as the main building adjoins it on the west.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it as a building that would not be easy to reproduce, one that with the main building catches the eye with its unusual appearance.

What to Look For

Look for the three floors of equal size and the tall, open upper floors (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Visiting

A Fukushima City plan lists it among the registered cultural properties within a kilometre of Iizaka Onsen Station. No official information on the inn's business was found.
