About the Ueno Family Residence Furnishings Storehouse

The Ueno Family Residence Furnishings Storehouse (上野家住宅調度蔵, Ueno-ke Jūtaku Chōdogura) is a 2-story Dozo-zukuri storehouse built in 1876 in Matsuyama-machi Muramatsu, Kitakata City, Fukushima Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2010.

It stands west of the main house and south of the Former Grain Storehouse on an east-west axis, measuring 8.6 by 4.8 meters with a building area of 46 square meters. It was built in the same year as the main house.

Chōdo means household furnishings and utensils, so the name suggests the storehouse was built to keep the family's furniture and household goods.

Why the Ueno Family Residence Furnishings Storehouse Was Registered

The Ueno Family Residence Furnishings Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.

Kitakata City lists storehouses for household goods among the many types found in the area, alongside shop storehouses, parlor storehouses and brewing storehouses. This is one of them, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs notes how carefully it is finished inside and out. Because it went up together with the main house, it shows the family providing for both their home and its contents at the same time.

What to Look For

The Ueno Family Residence Furnishings Storehouse has a gabled pantile roof, and its entrance is on a gable end, an arrangement called Tsumairi. A lean-to roof (Geya) added on the east side shelters the doorway.

The base is ringed with cut stone, and the walls are finished in Shikkui lime plaster above wooden boarding.

Inside, the ground floor is divided into a front room and a back room, and on both floors the walls are lined with wooden boards. For a building meant only to hold things, that is a thorough finish.
