About the Ueno Family Residence Detached House
The Ueno Family Residence Detached House (上野家住宅離屋, Ueno-ke Jūtaku Hanareya) is a single-story Dozo-zukuri guest pavilion built in 1917 in Matsuyama-machi Muramatsu, Kitakata City, Fukushima Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2010.
It stands southwest of the main house with a garden on its east side. The ridge runs north to south under a hip-and-gable roof (Irimoya-zukuri) laid with pantiles, and the building area is 46 square meters. It is the newest of the seven registered structures on the estate.
Why the Ueno Family Residence Detached House Was Registered
Like the main house, the Ueno Family Residence Detached House was registered as a model of design. These two are the only structures on the estate registered under that criterion.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a fine example of a modern space for receiving guests. Building on the estate began with a grain storehouse in the late Edo period and continued through the Meiji house, storehouses and brickwork; this guest pavilion of 1917 rounded it off.
Fine Timbers and Painted Doors
Inside, the Ueno Family Residence Detached House is a single ten-mat room with a veranda. An alcove and shelves are set into the west wall.
The builders chose prized woods: rosewood, Japanese zelkova (Keyaki) and shimagaki, persimmon wood with natural black streaks that was valued for alcove fittings. The sliding doors are decorated with paintings of landscapes and cranes.
A wing projecting to the west (Tsunoya) holds a bath and a toilet. A parlor, a garden view and its own bath and toilet, all in one building set apart from the main house: everything here points to a place for hosting guests in comfort.
Visiting the Ueno Family Residence Detached House
The Ueno Family Residence Detached House stands within the grounds, southwest of the main house and facing the garden. It does not face the street.
The estate is a private home and no public opening has been announced, so the timbers and painted doors cannot be seen at present. The layout of the estate and directions are on the Ueno Family Residence (Kitakata) page.
