What ōkabe means
Ōkabe is a form of wall construction in which the posts and beams of the frame are buried in plaster or covered with boards or mortar so that they cannot be seen from outside. Records also call it ōkabe-zukuri. The opposite method, in which the posts show on the wall face and the wall infill sits between them, is Shinkabe.
Ōkabe protects the timber from fire and rain. The clay-walled storehouse, its posts buried in thick earthen walls, is the classic example, and townhouse fronts plastered right up to the eaves in the Nuriya-zukuri manner are another. In modern buildings, Western-style outer walls that cover the posts with weatherboarding, mortar or tile are also treated as ōkabe.
The two methods can be combined in one building, with the side facing the street treated as ōkabe for fire protection or formality and the side facing the courtyard left with exposed posts.
Reading the records and the building
Records note which faces are ōkabe. The record for the ash house of the Hatakoshi family says that the southernmost bay of the west face has exposed posts and ties, while the part north of the doorway is ōkabe with a stone base, a clear example of both methods in one structure. The record for the gatehouse of the Okuno family says its walls have exposed posts inside the property and ōkabe on the street side.
How far the plaster extends varies. The record for the east storehouse of the Marumoto brewery describes ōkabe outer walls but notes that the eaves are not plastered over, which distinguishes it from a storehouse sealed in clay up to the eave soffits. When an article treats ōkabe, clay-walled storehouse construction and plastered townhouse fronts as interchangeable, it should check in the record whether the eaves are plastered too.
On site, see whether the posts show on the outer face. If the wall sits between posts that read as vertical lines, it is shinkabe; if the wall runs as one flat surface with no posts visible, it is ōkabe.
