What the Ishimoto Family Residence Corridor Is
The Ishimoto Family Residence Corridor (石本家住宅廻廊, Ishimoto-ke Jūtaku Kairō) is a late Meiji-era covered walkway on the Ishimoto estate in Higashihoncho, Konan Ward, Niigata City, renovated in the early Showa era and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2007.
It wraps the inner courtyard south of the main house on three sides, like a squared U. The walkway is one bay (about 1.8 m) wide under a gabled pantile roof (Kirizuma-zukuri, Sangawara-buki), 43 m long and 49 m² in area. No other Ishimoto structure runs as long.
On the courtyard side it is open, just a row of posts. On the south and west, by contrast, it closes itself off with Ōkabe walls, plastered solid right up to the eaves.
Why the Ishimoto Family Residence Corridor Was Registered
The Ishimoto Family Residence Corridor was registered for "contributing to the historic landscape." In the words of the Agency for Cultural Affairs, it lends dignity to the frontage of the estate.
What sets the Ishimoto Family Residence Corridor apart is that it shows two completely different faces. From the courtyard it is an open, airy walkway; from the front garden and the approach it reads as a long black wall. One building serves as both a garden veranda and part of the outer enclosure of the house.
It was built in the late Meiji era and renovated in the early Showa era. The database gives no specific year or scope for the renovation.
What to Look For at the Ishimoto Family Residence Corridor
The south and west walls are the thing to see. They are finished in black lime plaster that has been worked with a deliberately uneven surface, so the texture shifts as the light moves across it. It is a rougher, livelier finish than polished black plaster.
Below, the dado is mortar finished to look like stone; above, the eaves are coated in white Shikkui. Faux stone, black wall, white eaves: three bands of color and texture keep 43 m of wall from turning monotonous.
Step around to the inside and the Ishimoto Family Residence Corridor becomes an open colonnade. The drop from heavy outer wall to light inner posts is the best part of the building.
Seeing the Ishimoto Family Residence Corridor
The Ishimoto Family Residence Corridor encloses the courtyard inside a private estate and is not open to the public. As of September 30, 2026 no visits were being accepted.
Its black south and west walls face outward, but they stand inside the front gate and the nagayamon, and it has not been confirmed how much of the Ishimoto Family Residence Corridor can be seen from beyond the property. Directions to the estate are on the Ishimoto Family Residence page.
