What the Ishimoto Family Residence Side Gate and Flanking Wall Is

The Ishimoto Family Residence Side Gate and Flanking Wall (石本家住宅脇門及び袖塀, Ishimoto-ke Jūtaku Wakimon oyobi Sodebei) are an early Showa-era gate and wall on the Ishimoto estate in Higashihoncho, Konan Ward, Niigata City, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2007.

They run in a bracket shape from the southeast corner of the main house to the north end of the courtyard corridor, closing the east side of the inner courtyard. The gate is an Udekimon with a gabled copper roof (Kirizuma-zukuri, Dōban-buki) and a single hinged lattice door. It is 1.0 m wide.

The wall is timber with a copper-sheathed roof, 7.9 m long. It is a board wall faced on the courtyard side with cedar bark, held in place by split bamboo.

Why the Ishimoto Family Residence Side Gate and Flanking Wall Were Registered

The Ishimoto Family Residence Side Gate and Flanking Wall were registered for "contributing to the historic landscape." The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits their sukiya-style design, the refined, rustic manner associated with teahouses, with setting the mood of the courtyard.

The courtyard is enclosed by the corridor on the south and west and by the main house on the north; the Ishimoto Family Residence Side Gate and Flanking Wall close the east. Where the corridor turns a heavy black wall to the outside, the Ishimoto Family Residence Side Gate and Flanking Wall finish their side of the garden in soft materials, bark and bamboo. The innermost garden of the house is given its lightest edge.

What to Look For at the Ishimoto Family Residence Side Gate and Flanking Wall

The side gate is 1.0 m wide, less than half the 2.1 m of the front gate or the yokomon. With its single-leaf lattice door, it is sized for one person at a time.

On the courtyard face of the wall, split bamboo runs in even lines across the cedar bark. Bark held by bamboo recalls the garden fences around tea rooms, and this is where the sukiya taste of the Ishimoto Family Residence Side Gate and Flanking Wall shows most clearly.

The Ishimoto estate has two copper-roofed arm-bracketed gates, both early Showa: the front gate on the street edge and this side gate deep inside. The same form is used at two scales, one for the public face of the house and one for its private courtyard.
