What the Ishimoto Family Residence Nagayamon Gate Is

The Ishimoto Family Residence Nagayamon Gate (石本家住宅長屋門, Ishimoto-ke Jūtaku Nagayamon) is a late Meiji-era gatehouse on the Ishimoto estate in Higashihoncho, Konan Ward, Niigata City, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2007.

A Nagayamon is a gate built into a long, low building, with rooms on either side of the passage. This one stands south of the main house and faces the same way. It is five bays long and two bays deep, single-story, with a hipped roof of pantiles (Yosemune-zukuri, Sangawara-buki), and it covers 33 m².

The central passage is paved with stone. Its double doors are painted red with Bengara, and a small wicket door (Kugurido) is cut on each side. To the east of the passage is a board-floored room; to the west, a room with an earth floor.

Why the Ishimoto Family Residence Nagayamon Gate Was Registered

The Ishimoto Family Residence Nagayamon Gate was registered for "contributing to the historic landscape." The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out its heavy, composed exterior as the element that shapes the look of the whole estate.

The dates tell a small story. The front gate and concrete walls on the street edge are early Showa; the Ishimoto Family Residence Nagayamon Gate behind them is late Meiji. In the Meiji years this gatehouse was the face of the property, and only later was another gate and wall set in front of it.

What to Look For at the Ishimoto Family Residence Nagayamon Gate

The walls are finished in white Shikkui lime plaster, and the red doors are the strongest color on the front. It is a restrained elevation, and the doors carry it.

Look up at the eaves. They are built in the Degeta-zukuri manner, with brackets pushing the eave beam out beyond the wall so the roof can project further. The rafters are a single layer spaced well apart. Deep eaves over plain rafters are what give the building its low, steady profile.

The stone floor of the passage is worth noticing as well. With the doors open, the floor finishes change on either side, boards to the east and earth to the west, which shows the two rooms were meant for different work. The sources do not say what each room was used for.
