What the Ishimoto Family Residence Front Gate and Flanking Walls Is
The Ishimoto Family Residence Front Gate and Flanking Walls (石本家住宅表門及び袖塀, Ishimoto-ke Jūtaku Omotemon oyobi Sodebei) are an early Showa-era gate and walls on the southern edge of the Ishimoto estate in Higashihoncho, Konan Ward, Niigata City, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2007.
They stand south of the nagayamon gatehouse, on the outermost line of the property. The gate is a timber Udekimon, a gate whose small roof rests on projecting arms, with a gabled roof (Kirizuma-zukuri) sheathed in copper (Dōban-buki). It is 2.1 m wide and closed by a pair of sliding lattice doors. Above the lintel the opening is left empty rather than filled in with wall.
The walls run east and west from the gate for a total of 11 m. They are reinforced concrete, and their lower sections are stepped.
Why the Ishimoto Family Residence Front Gate and Flanking Walls Were Registered
The Ishimoto Family Residence Front Gate and Flanking Walls were registered for "contributing to the historic landscape." What the Agency for Cultural Affairs praises is the contrast: a light wooden gate beside heavy concrete walls, the pairing giving the estate frontage its accent.
This is the only one of the six Ishimoto registrations that uses reinforced concrete. In the early Showa era, a new gate and walls in a new material were placed in front of the Meiji nagayamon, so the estate frontage now shows two periods one behind the other, with the Ishimoto Family Residence Front Gate and Flanking Walls as the nearer layer.
What to Look For at the Ishimoto Family Residence Front Gate and Flanking Walls
On the gate, look at the gap above the lintel. Because it is open, light and a sense of the space beyond come through over the doors, and together with the vertical lines of the lattice this is what makes the gate look so light.
The walls do the opposite. Their stepped lower courses add weight and mass. Wood and copper on one side, stepped concrete on the other: seen together, the contrast is clearly deliberate.
Behind the gate stands the late Meiji nagayamon. Looking at the Showa gate with the Meiji gatehouse beyond it is the easiest way to understand how the Ishimoto frontage was assembled.
Seeing the Ishimoto Family Residence Front Gate and Flanking Walls
The Ishimoto Family Residence Front Gate and Flanking Walls mark the southern edge of the plot and are the outermost of the Ishimoto structures. Everything behind them is a private home, and as of September 30, 2026 no public opening had been announced. You cannot pass through the gate.
The owners have published no guidance on photography. If you look from outside, avoid lingering in front of the gate where you might block the household coming and going. Directions are on the Ishimoto Family Residence page.
