What the Abashiri Prison Museum Kagami Bridge Exit Guardhouse is

The Abashiri Prison Museum Kagami Bridge Exit Guardhouse (博物館網走監獄鏡橋出口哨舎, Hakubutsukan Abashiri Kangoku Kagamibashi Deguchi Shōsha) is a single-storey timber sentry post in Yobito, Abashiri City, Hokkaido, dated to 1912 and listed as a national Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 13 August 2012. It measures 3.2 square metres in floor area and is hexagonal in plan.

It originally stood at the far end of Kagami Bridge, facing its counterpart at the near end. One post at each end of the span: anyone crossing was watched from the opposite bank on the way over and watched again on arrival. Two lines of sight held the 29-metre bridge between them.

Glass fills all six faces. The sheet-metal roof is worked into a dome topped by a spear-shaped finial, an outline distinctive enough to identify the building from a distance.

A matched pair

Putting identical posts at both ends of a bridge turns a principle of surveillance into built form. A bridge offers nowhere to hide. Cover the two ends and the crossing is observed from start to finish.

The Abashiri Prison Museum Kagami Bridge Exit Guardhouse shares its floor area and hexagonal plan with the post at the entrance end. The openings differ: this one is glazed on every face.

Kagami Bridge spans the Abashiri River, and the version reconstructed at the museum is the second bridge, completed in 1917. The guardhouse itself was moved to the present grounds in 1992.

Why it is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property

The Abashiri Prison Museum Kagami Bridge Exit Guardhouse carries registration number 01-0128, granted under the criterion of being a model of design. It is unusual for two small buildings of the same function to survive together and to be listed together. What one alone cannot show, the pair makes legible: the logic behind where they were placed.

The domed roof and the finial count as well. A purely functional brief has been given the kind of finish that Meiji public works applied to buildings of every scale.

What to look for

Begin with the finial. A thin metal spike rises from the apex of the dome, serving no purpose that weatherproofing would require. Somebody chose to put it on a building of 3.2 square metres, and it sets the character of the whole thing.

Because glass runs around all six faces, looking at the post head-on lets you see the scenery straight through it. At certain angles the walls seem to vanish and only the timber frame remains.

Comparing it with the post at the entrance end is worth the walk. Same size, same hexagon, different treatment of the openings. Seeing the Abashiri Prison Museum Kagami Bridge Exit Guardhouse first and then the other one makes the difference obvious.

Visiting

The Abashiri Prison Museum Kagami Bridge Exit Guardhouse is on display within the grounds of the Abashiri Prison Museum. At 3.2 square metres it cannot be entered, but the glazing makes the interior visible from outside. It stands in the open, so winter visits call for proper footwear.

Admission is 1,500 yen for adults, 1,000 yen for high school students and 750 yen for elementary and junior high school students. Opening hours run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with last admission at 4:00 p.m., and the museum closes only on 31 December and 1 January. Severe weather that closes the national road can occasionally force an unscheduled closure.

Photography is allowed apart from certain exhibits and marked areas; filming for video-sharing sites and live streaming are not permitted. Pets may not be brought in, though assistance dogs are welcome.

The museum lies about 4 kilometres from JR Abashiri Station, some 10 minutes by bus or 7 minutes by car, and about 20 minutes by car from Memanbetsu Airport. Parking is free, with 400 spaces. The Abashiri Prison Museum Kagami Bridge Exit Guardhouse makes most sense viewed together with its counterpart, so mark both on the site map.
